After leaving the gymnasium, we were guided to our lodging rooms in small groups.
Our group consisted of 15 people.
I thought it would be split into 8 and 7, but it seemed all 15 of us were sharing one room.
Passing through the entrance door, there was depth to the left and right, a space that could comfortably fit 15 people with room to spare.
The size was roughly half a futsal court.
Inside, eight wooden bunk beds were installed, and I could analyze it as a place specialized for overnight stays rather than extended lodging.
"Quite an old-fashioned place, huh."
Ryuuen-kun was the first one to enter the room.
He walked toward the bunk bed in the depths of the room and climbed the ladder.
No matter how much his status within the class had dropped, there was no one who could give him orders.
He remained an unchanged symbol of fear.
"Then, Kamukura boy. I'll be using one of the other bunk beds by myself. You don't mind, right?"
"Yes, please feel free."
He walked off in high spirits toward the bunk bed opposite the one Ryuuen-kun had claimed.
Once there, he took the pillow from the lower bunk and carried it up, then began relaxing on the upper one.
I looked at the attendance confirmation sheet I'd received from Sakagami-sensei.
Even though the group members were starting to do as they pleased, only they were being selfish about it, so I didn't mind.
[Kamukura Group
Responsible Party: Izuru Kamukura
Members:
Class A: Masayoshi Hashimoto
Class B: Katsumi Tokito
Class C: Izuru Kamukura, Kakeru Ryuuen, Daichi Ishizaki, Albert Yamada, Satoru Kaneda, Kyogo Komiya, Masashi Sonoda, Takumi Oda, Hiroya Tokito, Hidetoshi Suzuki, Yuji Nomura, Kosetsu Yoshimoto
Class D: Rokusuke Koenji]
The group was composed of these 15 individuals.
From Class C, we had selected 12 people with high overall ability.
Ishizaki-kun and Komiya-kun weren't particularly good at studying, but they excelled in physical aspects.
Conversely, Kaneda-kun was excellent academically but often struggled with physical activities.
However, both possessed the crucial skill for group activities of being able to move exactly as instructed.
I evaluated them highly on that point.
Additionally, Nomura-kun and Suzuki-kun were outstanding in both studies and physicality, so they were selected.
The other members also each had some area where they excelled.
On top of that, they were the ones who had shown high growth rates under my guidance through the Sports Festival and Paper Shuffle.
"Kamukura-san! Can I take an upper bunk too?"
"Decide however you like."
"Understood!"
Ishizaki-kun replied energetically and gathered the remaining members.
With Koenji-kun occupying one full bunk bed and Ryuuen-kun taking the upper of another, there were six beds left.
They began a game of 'manly rock-paper-scissors' and enjoyed the battle for spots.
By the way, Albert and I didn't participate.
I was fine anywhere, and Albert said the lower bunk was more convenient for him because of his large body.
"Hashimoto-kun, Tokito-kun."
I called out to the two from other classes.
Hashimoto-kun from Class A and Tokito-kun from Class B—these were the two who had cooperated with our group.
Tokito-kun not only shared the same surname as Hiroya Tokito from Class C but had mentioned they were distant relatives.
"I'll guarantee you the best possible treatment within my capabilities. So, please cooperate in the exam without holding anything back."
"Yeah, I know."
Hashimoto-kun nodded, while Tokito-kun from Class B stood there with his mouth open, frozen.
"Is there some problem?"
"...No, no problem. It's just that the treatment is more proper than I expected... and I'm surprised at how well-organized Class C is."
For them in Class B, Class C was the enemy.
They'd never needed to know the enemy's internal situation before, so they were bewildered by this new information gained here.
"Indeed, I thought the atmosphere would be more brutal."
Hashimoto-kun said this while looking at Ryuuen-kun. Tokito-kun nodded in agreement.
"Also... you're more decent than I imagined."
"In your eyes, I probably still have the impression of someone who did cruel things to Chihiro Shiranami, right? First impressions are strong, so it can't be helped."
Tokito-kun, who had been stiff, gradually loosened up.
His view of me was as Ryuuen-kun's right-hand man or a selfish and ruthless person.
I didn't particularly want to change that now, but this conversation was necessary to have him demonstrate his full power in this exam.
"Also, I've already apologized to Chihiro Shiranami. She hasn't fully forgiven me yet, but I don't think you need to desperately monitor me like this."
"...Huh!?"
Tokito-kun's surprise was easy to read.
Unfortunately, I'm accustomed to surveillance gazes, so I noticed it right away.
He had probably been asked by Kanzaki-kun to probe my actions.
To see if Kamukura Izuru had changed from before or if he was planning any ruthless strategies.
Kanzaki-kun had tasked Tokito-kun with this investigation to determine if I had truly reflected.
"I won't tell you to stop the surveillance, and you can report to Kanzaki-kun if you want. Just promise that you won't intentionally slack off in the exam and will tackle it with full effort."
"...Got it. Besides, I want points from this test too, so I'll face it with complete sincerity."
"That's reassuring. Let's both give it our all."
He extended his hand for a handshake, so I shook it in return.
It seemed our friendship had been successfully established.
"Well then, both of you, please introduce yourselves. Staying tense for 7 nights and 8 days would be tiring, right? I'll make as much effort as possible on my end, but I'd appreciate it if you try to blend in a bit too."
Once the talk was over, Hashimoto-kun immediately drew attention and started his self-introduction.
As the rumors said, his communication skills were high.
I separated from them and headed toward my own bed.
The upper bunk was, as expected, occupied by Ryuuen-kun.
Incidentally, Albert was on the lower bunk next to mine, and Ishizaki-kun was above him.
From the fiercely competitive rock-paper-scissors, the ones who got upper bunks were Ishizaki-kun, Sonoda-kun, Nomura-kun, and Suzuki-kun.
To introduce them: Sonoda-kun was a soccer club member.
I didn't know if Nomura-kun and Suzuki-kun were in clubs, but both were as I mentioned earlier.
During the shipboard exam, they had been in the Dragon Group, which gathered excellent students from the class, so their overall abilities were among the top in class.
"Koenji-kun, why don't you introduce yourself too?"
"No need for that. It's been quite some time since this school started, and there isn't a single person who doesn't know about me~"
He said this while lying down.
Yes, everyone was well aware of a weirdo like you.
With this utterly unwavering free spirit, I even felt a mysterious sense of relief.
...
The first day's dinner time arrived—the period when we could make contact with the girls.
I headed to the cafeteria alone.
The cafeteria I'd seen in the pamphlet was capable of accommodating a huge number of people, with a structure that allowed you to look down on the first floor from the stairs.
Its capacity was about 5,000 people, enough for the entire student body to pack in and make a mess.
Upon arriving, a vast cafeteria matching that description without exaggeration welcomed me.
Spending one fixed hour a day in a designated place with the girls. This was clearly time aimed at information sharing.
As I moved forward while observing the surroundings, most students were chatting happily with same-gender friends or the opposite sex.
However, there were also those observing the area like me or diligently collecting information.
"That is..."
While observing the actions around me, one female student's behavior caught my eye.
The female student's name was Kikyou Kushida.
She was acting together with students who seemed to be upperclassmen.
Carrying her tray, she sat in the same spot and joined the cheerful gathering.
With so many people around, I couldn't make out the conversation content, but the good atmosphere was clearly visible; they were spending time on very friendly terms.
I read the content from the movement of her lips.
"She's trying to grasp the second-years' situation. As expected of her."
The content was about the second-year groups.
She was asking in detail about the responsible parties and class compositions.
Afterward, Kushida-san cleanly separated from that group without any loose ends.
Then she immediately shook her head, targeted the next upperclassman, and walked quickly toward them.
"Kamukura-kun~"
Someone called my name, so I stopped my thoughts for a moment.
Looking in the direction of the voice, Yajima-san was approaching while holding the serving tray with both hands.
Shiina-san was beside her, and the two were searching for seats.
"Is the seat in front of you reserved?"
"No, I'm just here to find someone."
"Then, can we take those seats?"
The seats in front weren't reserved by anyone, so I nodded.
The two sat facing each other at the four-person table, and I stopped loitering near the seats and stayed there.
"You look tired."
"...Yes, talking to so many different people is this exhausting, huh."
Shiina-san, who normally didn't interact much with people, was clearly showing the backlash in the form of fatigue. She leaned back against her seat and relaxed.
The fact that she was doing this meant she had taken the task with genuine seriousness. Her attitude of pushing through something she wasn't good at was admirable.
"So, what kind of members ended up in the girls' groups?"
Instead of asking the completely exhausted Shiina-san, I turned to Yajima-san, who still had energy to spare, and inquired about the current situation.
"The girls' side, you know~"
In her laid-back tone, Yajima-san explained the girls' group divisions in detail. I organized the information on all six groups in my head.
① A group of 11 with 9 from Class A, 1 from Class C, and 1 from Class D. (Responsible Party: Masumi Kamuro from Class A)
② A group of 14 with 11 from Class B and 1 each from the other classes. (Responsible Party: Asako Amikura from Class B)
③ A group of 15 with 12 from Class C and 1 each from the other classes. (Responsible Party: Mariko Yajima from Class C)
④ A group of 15 with 10 from Class D, 3 from Class B, and 1 each from Class A and Class C. (Responsible Party: Suzune Horikita from Class D)
⑤ A 12-person group with 4 from Class A, 1 from Class B, 5 from Class C, and 2 from Class D. (Responsible Party: Shiho Manabe from Class C)
⑥ A 13-person group with 4 from Class A, 4 from Class B, and 5 from Class D. (Responsible Party: Yuki Himeno from Class B)
Class C had responsible parties in two groups, both mixed with students from all four classes. If they secured the maximum points, quite a substantial amount would come in.
On top of that, the single Class B student in group ⑤ was Ichinose-san. Even without Sakayanagi-san there, she could serve as a strong substitute. For raising the average score, there was no better talent available.
"Why Ichinose-san?"
"She joined at the very last moment of the discussion as a mediator to pull the leftover students together. That's the feeling I got. It was a kind move, but a losing one for her class. It lowers their chances of getting points."
Just as Yajima-san said, the discussion had apparently wrapped up nicely as a result, but Class B had taken a major hit to their winning odds.
This was simply being a good person—boring.
"The 11-person group centered around Class A is Sakayanagi-san's group, right?"
"Yeah. Sakayanagi-san took the lead and was the first to act."
"I see. Were there any strange points during the girls' discussion?"
"Hmm... The main one was Kamuro-san from Class A saying things like 'We won't accept students from Class B' or 'Ichinose-san can't be trusted'—clearly things that disturbed the group's harmony."
That statement left some questions. Ichinose-san's likability was the highest in the grade, even surpassing Kikyou Kushida. For Kamuro-san to criticize someone like her... It would only lower her own standing.
She wasn't the type to do something so pointless. Which meant Sakayanagi-san was definitely involved.
"Because of that! It took so much time!"
Yajima-san spread both arms wide, appealing for me to listen. In contrast, Shiina-san slumped her upper body limply.
"...I was really surprised that everyone clearly stated their likes and dislikes."
"Saying it straight to their faces like that was definitely shocking~. But girls are often like that, Shiina-san. Being clear about likes and dislikes isn't necessarily a bad thing. Listen to this, Kamukura-kun! There was a girl from Class D who said she didn't want to be grouped with Class C!"
"I see."
"You're not interested at all~"
"I'm listening. Information about the girls is valuable."
Yajima-san kept giving me a suspicious look at my indifferent attitude.
She puffed out her cheeks for a moment and twisted her mouth into a pout.
"Really?"
"Yes. Most likely, that girl was confronting Manabe-san, right?"
"Eh, y-yes! How did you know!?"
This time Yajima-san opened her eyes and mouth wide. Her expressions were rich and easy to read.
"Just a hunch."
"...Really?"
I nodded, but she didn't look convinced at all. However, before that, Shiina-san continued the conversation.
"When she directly said she didn't want to be in the same group as Manabe-san, the atmosphere became explosive and I panicked. Human relationships are difficult."
Being clear about likes and dislikes is a good thing, but the boldness to say it face-to-face is a negative from the perspective of group activities.
The school's assessment would drop. However, from the viewpoint of individual strength, it meant having a firm will.
"Well, Manabe-san isn't exactly known for having a good attitude~. It feels like her usual behavior finally caught up with her—serves her right."
If your ego is too strong, it becomes poison.
An arrogant personality easily creates enemies and gets you cast out from society.
And for Manabe-san, not only that, but her true personality itself is problematic.
"But Manabe-san surprisingly didn't get angry. With her personality, I thought she'd heat up immediately after being spoken to like that."
"Yeah, that was unexpected. But she was holding back a lot. She was gripping her right hand really tightly. What surprised me even more was that she honestly apologized. I mean, it was that Manabe-san of all people!"
I felt a little surprised at that outcome.
An apology was indeed unlike Manabe-san.
She had a short-tempered personality that became direct when provoked, almost as quick to fight as Ibuki-san.
So if she simply wasn't in the mood to argue and ignored them, that would make sense.
In fact, one of the instructions I gave her on the bus was simply: "There will be some conflict when deciding the small girls' groups, so think carefully and act accordingly."
I had other things for her to do as well and explained various matters, but I hadn't given any instructions that could be handled just by acting like a puppet.
And her choice was to suppress herself with reason and avoid the conflict. It wasn't entirely unexpected, but it seemed she was desperately trying to complete the task I'd given her before.
"Hmm, so she's trying to change as well."
"Yeah~. Maybe getting summoned by a certain someone changed Manabe-san."
Yajima-san grinned mischievously. Her teasing smile resembled the one Ryuuen-kun made when asking vulgar questions.
"The rumor is already spreading~. They're saying the reason Manabe-san has become a bit more docile is because of you, Kamukura-kun."
"...Ah, so that's what this is about."
I understood immediately.
The rumor Yajima-san mentioned was about the time shortly before the rooftop incident when I called Manabe-san to a cafe to organize information.
Right before that, she had been hanging out with her friends. The story must have spread from there and reached even Yajima-san.
"Yabu-san and Yamashita-san were saying that the usually super-aggressive Manabe-san has become a little gentler~. And right before she started acting nicer, when they heard you had called her out, Kamukura-kun... so it's that kind of thing, right?"
Nanami Yabu and Saki Yamashita. Those two were students who often hung around with Manabe-san.
"Indeed, that's exactly what happened."
"Ooh! So it's true!"
Since I didn't deny it, Yajima-san's expression lit up with excitement.
"I didn't do anything like what you're imagining during that call. I simply advised her to think about how she should conduct herself going forward."
"I see~. So that's why she put it into practice right away."
Yajima-san laughed with a wicked look. Her romance-obsessed brain was probably working overtime trying to figure out what emotion was behind Manabe-san's honesty.
"Kamukura-kun likes strong-willed women like Ibuki-san and Manabe-san. Is that your type?"
A straight 150 km fastball came flying from Shiina-san, who had been silently listening the whole time.
"Not particularly. I just think that people with strong wills have the potential to show me something unknown."
Precisely because they are ordinary, strong will is important.
Even ordinary people can see the tiniest possibility if they have that.
The good or bad of their personality doesn't matter.
"The conversation was enjoyable. Well then, if you'll excuse me."
Since the target person had appeared in my peripheral vision, I cut the conversation short.
"See you~"
I nodded to Yajima-san, who waved at me, and headed toward that person—Arisu Sakayanagi.
As I moved, she noticed me as well and guided me with her eyes to the seat she had secured.
...
"Sorry to keep you waiting."
"I was guided to the seats Class A had secured."
Sakayanagi-san seated each of her several subordinates one by one in the surrounding chairs, creating a tightly guarded space. Thanks to this, the heavy concentration of gazes fixed on me during tonight's dinner time scattered.
With a human wall formed around us, anyone who was merely watching could be easily blocked off. What remained were only the stares of those pretending not to look.
I had already identified the people still watching us. They were the higher-quality pieces among Miyabi Nagumo's pawns.
"Good evening, Izuru-kun. I've been looking forward to spending this time with you today."
Once I sat across from her, the stage for negotiation was perfectly set.
Her cheerful expression reminded me of our chess match. The charming smile that mixed childlike innocence and seductive allure replaced the icy mask that usually wore a polite grin.
I could read the satisfaction of someone savoring the joy of a wish finally granted.
"First, allow me a question. Why are you taking this special exam so seriously?"
"To fulfill Ryuuen-kun's orders."
"Orders? May I hear the details?"
Like a spoiled girl, she pressed forward eagerly. I answered without any lies or deception.
"His order was for me to show him the completed form of a leader. He wants to absorb as much knowledge as possible from it and aim even higher."
"I see… Fufu, that does sound like him."
My explanation seemed to convince her.
"For this occasion alone, I really must give Ryuuen-kun my deepest gratitude. The chance to witness your true abilities this early in our school life has arrived. This honor leaves me choked with tears of joy."
"You're exaggerating."
"No, I'm not exaggerating at all. The truth is, I've already been defeated."
With a satisfied expression, she brought food to her mouth. After chewing thoroughly and swallowing, she spoke again.
"Ahh, how frustrating. With just that single message, I realized I was dancing in the palm of your hand and was led exactly along the path you wanted."
There was clear regret over her defeat, and she had analyzed its cause. Yet even so, she felt satisfaction at having been completely shut out.
"If you only wanted to cooperate with me, you could have contacted me on the bus. But you didn't. Because doing so would have robbed the Class C girls of their growth opportunity."
Class C was Ryuuen-kun's one-man dominant class. Now that its pillar had crumbled, someone other than me needed to step in as proxy. At the same time, we needed to create someone capable of leading the girls—the long-standing weakness of Class C.
That's why I judged this special exam as the perfect opportunity for Shiina-san and the other students to grow.
However, given the gap in original potential and experience, if they fought head-on against the leaders of other classes, Shiina-san would have slim chances of winning.
Especially in a battle of words against Sakayanagi-san—she would have lost 100% of the time. And if that happened, Sakayanagi-san wouldn't ease her offensive. It would lead to the ostracization of Class C, force group formations to go her way, and build countermeasures against me.
"You deliberately left my actions free so Shiina-san and the vice-leader could practice negotiating with superiors. Then, when signs of defeat appeared, not only did you prepare a single move to completely seal me, but you also guided me into realizing a negotiation favorable to myself and lured me to your side as an ally. On top of that, by showcasing Kamukura-kun's presence to Class C, you boosted morale and strengthened the crucial cooperation needed for this exam."
"It seems there's no need for me to explain anything."
The general flow was exactly as she described.
"And your real objective was to negotiate the contract we made during the Uninhabited Island Exam without creating any position favorable to me, correct? You anticipated that I would try to use this exam to propose breaking the contract and moved preemptively to stop it."
I applauded the white girl's flawless deduction.
Sakayanagi-san had planned to use the rooftop incident and advance favorably in this special exam to force negotiations with Class C.
The general script would have been to pull Class C students into groups consisting only of her own class, drive them to the brink of expulsion.
If she could appoint someone responsible, all the better; if she wanted to avoid producing expelled students at any cost, she would demand the contract's cancellation as compensation.
With Ryuuen-kun having stepped down as leader, a now leaderless Class C was the perfect chance to attack. Moreover, this exam was a girls-only battle.
If my presence—the only real risk factor—was removed, she would have executed such a plan at full force. And it would have succeeded without fail.
That's why I took measures to prevent it.
"Correct answer. Would you like a reward?"
"Then please give me a Ultimate hug."
"I don't possess such a talent."
Sakayanagi-san set down her chopsticks and spread her arms wide.
Her request went one step beyond what I expected. I see—so when romantic feelings mix with Komaeda-like thinking, it creates this rarely seen crazy thought process.
It was ridiculous that her response actually made me find it slightly amusing.
"Fufu, did you know, Izuru-kun? Hugging promotes the secretion of hormones like beta-endorphins, oxytocin, and dopamine."
"And that gives you a sense of happiness and satisfaction, so it becomes a reward?"
Faced with Sakayanagi-san's beaming smile, I felt like sighing. As expected, she really is troublesome.
"Ask Ayanokouji-kun for that."
"Yes, I'll have him do it someday."
Her queen-like arrogance—the belief that she would obtain whatever she desired—remained fully intact.
The conversation had reached a natural break. It was about time.
"Let's move on to the contract."
Noticing the change in my atmosphere, Sakayanagi-san also put on a serious expression.
She took out a paper folded into quarters from her pocket and handed it to me. It contained the contract details. I quickly skimmed through the meticulously written contents.
"I will confirm the contract terms. What Class C desires is 'Class A boys promise not to take first place in the Mixed Training Camp.' Is that correct?"
After confirming I had finished reading, Sakayanagi-san performed her verification. I nodded, and the discussion continued.
"In exchange, 'a reduction in the payment points from the Uninhabited Island Exam contract.' Specifically, 'a reduction equal to the points Class A would receive for taking first place—that is, 420,000 PP and a reduction of 126 CP.' No mistakes there?"
"Yes. Whether the 420,000 PP is paid after the exam ends or deducted from the next collection amount is up to you."
If Class A took first place in this special exam, they would gain 420,000 PP and 126 CP. If Class C took first, we would gain 1,080,000 PP and 336 CP.
Calculating the profit, fulfilling this contract would yield a net gain of 660,000 PP and 210 CP. Quite a substantial profit.
"Let's go with a lump sum payment after the exam ends."
"Understood."
I wrote down the details in her notebook. Even though it was a simple contract sheet, I was grateful she had prepared it. This way we could proceed without any worries.
"First, Class A accepts this contract. There are no parts we wish to revise."
Because of the rooftop incident, she could probably move a little more favorably, but it seemed she was choosing to play it safe this time.
"I see. Then Class C also has no complaints, so shall we consider the contract officially formed?"
"Yes. For now, please sign this provisional contract. We'll formalize the full contract with the same content after the special exam."
Since this contract was beneficial for us, I signed it immediately. After returning the provisional contract to Sakayanagi-san, she tucked it into her pocket.
"I didn't show mercy for Class C's sake. The Uninhabited Island Exam contract was something that would eventually be canceled anyway. Being able to reduce it now is already a great result. On top of that, we can still aim for points in this special exam. It's an incredibly sweet deal."
She added the explanation as if to supplement her point.
The Uninhabited Island Exam contract had been formed by Katsuragi-kun. It was the worst possible contract made due to his insufficient thinking.
That was why she was desperate to break it.
She saw this as the first step toward cancellation and had no intention of letting such a chance slip away. Additionally, even if Class C didn't take first in the Mixed Training Camp, getting second would still earn points.
More importantly, this contract only applied to the boys. If Class A placed high in the girls' division, they could earn even more points. That was why she hadn't pushed aggressively during these negotiations.
"Well, there was also the fact that bringing up the rooftop incident might cause trouble for him as well. That was another reason."
"That's very like you. They say love drives people mad, and it seems you also fall under that logic."
The reason she didn't bring the rooftop matter into the contract discussion was because she didn't want to cause trouble for him—Ayanokouji-kun. It was a very human reason, and it seemed my theory that no talent is needed to feel warmth wasn't a lie.
"It's not love. I admit it's a similar emotion, though."
"Then is it affection?"
"Yes, familial affection."
I understood the process and methods of romance, but not the sensation itself. In that regard alone, Arisu Sakayanagi was superior to me. So her self-analysis was probably correct.
"You won't choose your means when it comes to obtaining what you hold dear. You have a personality that won't be satisfied unless it's completely within your grasp, so I can't imagine you giving up on him."
"Yes. I won't give up. That's exactly why I made a promise to compete, and until I fulfill that promise, I won't do anything that would trouble him. Does that make sense?"
"Yes, I'm convinced."
What a silly line of reasoning. But this too was experience. This was what the secular world was like.
"Thank you for the meal. Well then, Izuru-kun, shall we enjoy some casual conversation for the remaining time?"
"That would have been fine, but I still have things to do."
Sakayanagi-san had placed her chopsticks down with elegant movements, but after having her invitation declined, her expression darkened as if she couldn't believe reality. S
ince we had to hand over our phones to the school for this exam, direct conversation was the only way to exchange information.
And the only time we could contact the girls was during this dinner period. Understanding that, she hid her dissatisfaction and smiled.
"Is there anything I can help you with?"
"There is, but I can't offer you any benefit in return."
"If it's about benefits, I've already received plenty. If there's anything I can help with, I'll cooperate."
I found her cooperative attitude slightly suspicious, but there was no lie in it.
"Then, there are a few things I'd like to ask of you."
I went ahead and told her what I needed. Upon hearing it, she gave an elegant laugh and agreed. Afterward, I returned my tray to the return counter and went to look for Manabe-san.
