Chapter 5 - Wedding

Bell Rings...

The Laurdy family has a new member. Kelly Buenavista Laurdy is now officially the lawful wife of Aiden Laurdy.

The morning sun poured through the high window as Kelly sat before the vanity mirror, her reflection adorned in delicate white lace and heavy silk. The blinding brightness of the morning seemed to clash with the deep, suffocating shadows of the Laurdy estate, making the weight of the day press even harder upon her chest. Still, she looked at her pale face, took a quiet breath, and forced a smile.

"Look at you; you're so gorgeous." Louryn stood behind her, hands clasped tightly together as she admired the bride.

"No one has ever imagined that you will be Mrs. Laurdy, the one and only beloved wife of Aiden. The past is reminiscing. Aiden is my childhood friend, and now he's going to get married. When will I meet my destiny? Ohhh... Please, please, gods in heaven, give me my man."

Kelly laughed softly, the dramatic performance momentarily breaking her anxiety. "Louryn… What are you doing?"

Louryn's cheeks instantly flushed a bright pink. "Ohh... I'm sorry I didn't mean that; this is your day."

"Nonsense, Louryn, you're beautiful..." Kelly reached out and squeezed her hand, drawing comfort from the warmth of a familiar friend in this cold house. "You're going to meet him someday. Don't rush things; it is not good."

Louryn smiled, her eyes crinkling. "Wooo... Thanks..." She paused, her eyes glistening with a sudden wave of genuine emotion. "By the way, congratulations on your wedding... I wish you a happy life." She quickly waved her hands in front of her face, trying to stop the oncoming sentimentality. "Okay, that's enough, Kelly. I don't want tears to flow this early in the morning. Let's just get you ready; I know the people will love how you look today. This is your day; keep that face pretty and gorgeous."

Kelly's smile faltered for a moment. Her gaze dropped to the tabletop, where the shadows of the room seemed to gather around her bridal accessories. "Thank you, Louryn, for helping me today; your presence is much appreciated. I just can't help it; I'm getting married today, and my family doesn't even show up. I don't know when it all started. I know my mother is with me today, so I'm going to cheer up a little bit. I can't do anything about things I can't control."

Louryn's expression softened into deep empathy. Sensing the heavy isolation settling over her friend, she wrapped her arms around Kelly in a warm, protective embrace. "Ahh… Kelly..."

Kelly hugged her back tightly, closing her eyes and blinking back the tears that threatened to ruin her makeup.

Louryn pulled away slowly, keeping her hands reassuringly on Kelly's shoulders. "That's fine; you have your new family now. A big one, to be exact."

Kelly laughed, the sound light and genuine this time, masking the shudder that passed through her at the thought of the massive, dark-eyed clan waiting for her. "I'm really thankful to you, Louryn. I know we have known each other for a while now. I hope our friendship will strengthen as time passes by. Thank you for being with me today."

A sharp knock on the heavy wooden door interrupted them.

"Ladies, are you done preparing?" A voice called from the other side, sounding crisp and urgent. "The carriage will be here in a minute; you have to get ready."

Louryn called back eagerly, "Thank you, Aunt Susan. She's almost ready, just a little bouquet of roses and the family heirloom that only blooms in the night, the queen of the night... done..." She giggled, carefully pinning the rare, pale flower into Kelly's hair, its subtle, intoxicating scent immediately filling the air.

Aunt Susan's voice came through the thick door again, "Okay, then we just have to wait for the carriage to arrive, and up we go; the people in the church are waiting."

Louryn clapped her hands in pure delight. "Can't wait to start the wedding… I'm so excited, Kelly; I can't wait."

She hurried over to the glass and peeked out the window, watching the cobblestone driveway below. "Look, Kelly, the carriage is already here. Ohhh, just to inform you, you're going alone in the carriage, so I can't go with you, so good luck and best wishes."

Kelly nodded, her heart pounding violently against her ribs as the reality of the moment set in.

Inside the carriage, Kelly sat entirely alone. The heavy velvet curtains isolated her from the world, and the rhythmic clatter of horse hooves against the road filled the silence. The world outside blurred past the small glass window, but her thoughts remained fixed on what lay ahead. She no longer knew what would happen to her after marrying into the Laurdy family, a clan shrouded in chilling legends, unnatural eyes, and unescapable traditions. The doubts crept in like shadows, darkening her mind with every passing mile.

Yet, amidst the fear and the overwhelming suffocating presence of the Laurdy name, one thing kept her going, her love for Aiden. He was the anomaly, the one with eyes as black as a moonless night, detached from the terrifying glow of the rest of his lineage. After everything that had happened, after the forced arrangements and the whispers of the village, she could not deny that truth. She loved him.

The carriage slowed as it approached the church, and Kelly gathered all her strength and confidence, straightening her posture. She reached inside the folds of her white dress and pressed her hand firmly against her chest, feeling the solid, familiar shape of the locket beneath her gown. It was her anchor, her secret sanctuary.

This was the day that everything would change.

The carriage door opened, and she stepped out into the crisp air. Her white dress trailed behind her like a promise on the stone steps. The church bells rang out, their heavy iron chimes echoing through the valley, and the people of Bial turned in unison to watch. Kelly Buenavista Laurdy walked forward, into the unknown, into the destiny she had chosen.

Deep in the shadows of the valley, the goddess of the Valley remained silent.

But Kelly walked anyway.
