Chapter 6 - Pressure Above

The absolute stillness hanging over pedestal seven felt heavier than any explosion.

For ten agonizing seconds, nobody spoke. The instructor standing beside Ethan leaned in, squinting at the suspended metal sphere, then at his clipboard, then back at the orb. The white runes didn't flicker. They burned with a cold, solid luminescence that looked less like magic and more like light trapped in diamond.

Ding!

The chime didn't echo as it had for the others. It rang out crisp and clear, cutting through the colosseum like a glass rod striking marble.

"Pedestal seven... Perfect Synchronization!" the instructor yelled, his voice cracking slightly as he scrambled to record the result. "Time: Thirty seconds!"

Ethan calmly withdrew his palm. The moment his skin broke contact, the liquid silver gauntlet flowed back over his hand, sealing his wrist and fingers in seamless, seamless grey plating. The white light on the orb faded back to a dull violet, and the sphere resumed its gentle, floating bob as if nothing had happened.

In the stands, a low murmur rippled outward. Princess Lyanna's eyes narrowed slightly as she watched Ethan step back. On the high balcony, Magnus Hale stroked his chin, a rare flicker of genuine curiosity breaking his drowsy expression, while Selene Vael simply smiled—a faint, knowing curve of her lips.

Ethan walked back toward the staging boundary where Toby was still catching his breath on the dirt.

"That was..." Toby swallowed hard, looking up at the six-foot-three silver titan. "I don't even know what that was, Sir Ethan. The runes didn't even pulse!"

"Resonance is just frequency," Ethan said softly, his voice muffled by his helm as he looked down at the boy. "If you match the vibration, there's no friction. You did well holding your ground, Toby. Your control is cleaner than half the nobles in that front row."

Toby flushed red, rubbing the back of his neck, but before he could thank Ethan, the deep gong at the center of the arena struck twice.

Lady Seraphine stepped to the edge of the elevated stone platform, her crimson cape snapping in the rising wind. Below her, the surviving sixty applicants—having survived the brutal sixty-percent attrition rate of the Orbs of Resonance—assembled into tight, disciplined rows.

"Congratulations to those who stand before me," Seraphine's voice boomed, reinforced by the stadium's acoustic arrays. "You have proven that you possess basic internal discipline. Now, we test your ability to execute tactics under pressure."

She gestured toward the far end of the arena. The heavy portcullis gates at the four cardinal points of the colosseum began to grind upward, revealing dark, sloping tunnels leading into the subterranean training corridors below.

"The Second Stage is a tactical squad engagement," Seraphine announced. "The sixty remaining applicants will be divided into four large Teams: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. Fifteen combatants per team. Each team will be deployed into a separate sector of the subterranean ruins beneath this arena."

She raised a single gloved finger, and the projection screens above the stands flared into life, displaying a three-dimensional map of a massive, multi-level stone labyrinth.

"Your objective is simple," she continued.

"Deep within the central vault of the ruins lies a single objective key—a high-density mana core. The team that secures the core and brings it to the surface extraction point wins the evaluation. However..."

Seraphine paused, her dark eyes sweeping over the crowd with cold amusement.

"Combat between teams is fully authorized. There are no individual scores in this stage. You win as a unit, or you fail as a unit. Weapon strikes must be non-lethal, but severe physical disabling is permitted. If a contestant's barrier badge is shattered, or if they are rendered incapacitated, they are eliminated."

An instructor stepped forward, holding a large brass vessel filled with glowing parchment slips.

"Draw your assignments!"

Ethan stepped up, reached into the vessel, and pulled out a slip of heavy paper. The parchment glowed with a dull amber light, forming a single letter: Team Gamma.

A second later, Toby hurried over, nervously checking his own slip. A small sigh of relief escaped his lips. "I got Gamma too! Sir Ethan, we're on the same team!"

"Good," Ethan said. He scanned the remaining crowd, watching as the other applicants gathered under their respective team banners.

Team Gamma was an odd assembly. Aside from Ethan and Toby, the fifteen-man roster included a towering, axe-wielding mercenary named Bram who looked like he had survived a dozen border wars, and a quiet, sharp-eyed archer named Kaelen who carried a heavy compound bow strung with enchanted steel wire. The rest were a mix of mid-tier mages and physical vanguard applicants who looked visibly nervous about the subterranean environment.

Ethan glanced across the yard. Prince Cassian had been assigned to Team Alpha, his red hair flaring like fire as he rallied his fifteen men with loud, boisterous laughter. Princess Lyanna led Team Beta, her team already moving in tight, precise military formation. Team Delta was led by a pair of arrogant, high-born nobles from the capital who were already barking orders at their subordinates.

"Keep your head on a swivel down there, Toby," Ethan advised quietly as Team Gamma moved toward the eastern tunnel entrance. "Subterranean maps favor ambushes and choke points. Don't trust open corridors."

"Right behind you, Sir Ethan," Toby said, tightening his grip on his shortsword and shield.

Part II: Into the DepthsThe iron portcullis slammed down behind Team Gamma with a deafening crash, sealing out the sunlight of the main colosseum.

The subterranean sector was vast—a sprawling network of ancient, moss-covered granite corridors, broken vaulted ceilings, and wide, stone-paved plazas illuminated only by glowing blue mana-crystals embedded in the high walls. The air was cool, damp, and smelled of old earth and ozone.

Bram, the heavy mercenary, stepped up to the front of the formation, resting his massive double-headed axe over his shoulder. "Alright, listen up!" he grunted, looking back at the fourteen other members. "I've fought in three dungeon sieges. In corridors like this, heavy armor takes the front, ranged in the middle, light scouts in the rear. Giant silver guy—" he pointed his leather-wrapped gauntlet at Ethan "—you take the vanguard with me. Kid—" he gestured to Toby "—you stay in the center with the mages and keep your shield up."

Ethan didn't argue. Tactical hierarchy made sense, and letting Bram think he was in charge kept Team Gamma organized. "Acceptable," Ethan replied smoothly.

The squad advanced cautiously through the winding stone passages, their boots echoing softly against the flags. Kaelen, the archer, moved ten paces ahead, his bow half-drawn as his sharp eyes scanned the shadows of every arched doorway.

For twenty minutes, Team Gamma pushed deeper into Sector Three. They bypassed two empty plazas and traversed a narrow stone bridge spanning a fifty-foot drop into an underground cistern.

"We're making good time," Bram muttered, wiping sweat from his thick brow. "The central vault should be just past the next major junction."

"Too good," Ethan thought silently.

In his mind, his celestial awareness was passively picking up the subtle shifts in the ambient mana of the dungeon. The natural background energy wasn't flowing smoothly. It was being churned, displaced by multiple moving sources fast approaching their position.

"Krindrus," Ethan communicated internally.

"Two distinct clusters," Krindrus answered instantly, his tone laced with clinical disinterest. "Thirty meters north-northwest, and forty meters northeast. They are utilizing phase-dampening cloaks to mask their kinetic footprints. A coordinated pincer movement. Primitive, yet structured."

Ethan paused in the center of a large, ruined courtyard filled with collapsed stone pillars. "Stop," he said, his voice flat and commanding.

Bram blinked, turning around with a frown. "What? We're fifty yards from the junction—"

"It's a trap," Ethan said. "We have two squads closing in on our flanks."

Before Bram could respond, the blue mana-crystals along the courtyard walls suddenly flickered and died, plunging the vast stone chamber into dim shadow.

"NOW!"

A harsh voice echoed from the upper balcony of the courtyard.

From the darkness above, figures rained down. Ten—no, twelve armored combatants landed with heavy thuds on the stone floor, their blades already drawn and glowing with red and purple combat aura.

It was a combined assault. Team Alpha's vanguard and Team Delta's secondary strike force had formed a temporary pact, merging their squads to eliminate Team Gamma before reaching the central vault.

"Form a circle! Form a circle!" Bram roared, swinging his massive axe in a broad arc to force back the first wave of attackers.

Chaos erupted in the courtyard. Weapons clashed with deafening metallic cracks, and spells flared in brilliant bursts of orange and green light, throwing long, erratic shadows across the ancient pillars. Kaelen released arrow after arrow with blinding speed, pinning two rushing spearmen to the stone, while Gamma's mages hastily erected defensive barriers.

Ethan moved like a wall of solid silver.

A heavy knight from Team Delta charged him with a massive, two-handed broadsword, channeling a second-tier kinetic strike into the steel. Ethan didn't even raise a weapon. He simply stepped into the attack, catching the descending six-foot blade in his bare gauntlet.

CLANG!

The shockwave blew the dust off the stone, but Ethan's arm didn't move a single inch. Before the knight could pull back in horror, Ethan delivered a simple, open-palm thrust into the man's breastplate. The kinetic feedback blasted the knight backward thirty feet, crashing him straight through a granite pillar before he crumpled, unconscious, his barrier badge shattering instantly.

A second later, two skirmishers tried to flank Ethan, their daggers trailing wind-elemental magic. Ethan ducked beneath the first swing, caught the second skirmisher by his leather vest, and tossed him bodily into his partner, knocking them both out of the fight in a tangled heap.

He was a fortress. Nothing could break through him.

And that was precisely what the enemy squad leaders had counted on.

"Ignore the silver behemoth!" a voice shouted from the shadows above. "Bypass him! Target the weak link in the rear! Strip their support!"

While Ethan was drawing the attention of five attackers at the front, six dark-cloaked combatants—specialized flankers from Team Delta using shadow-step spells—slipped around the perimeter of the collapsed pillars.

They moved like ghosts through the dim light, completely bypassing Ethan's position.

Their target was the center of Team Gamma's formation.

Their target was Toby.

Toby was desperately trying to protect one of Gamma's wounded mages, holding his light wooden shield high as rogue arrow fire rained down.

Suddenly, the shadow behind him detached itself from the pillar.

"Gotcha, kid," a harsh voice growled.

Toby turned, his eyes widening in terror as three heavily armed flankers burst from the darkness simultaneously.

The lead attacker, a scar-faced mercenary wielding twin serrated trench-knives, struck first. Toby managed to get his shield up, but the force of the strike was brutal. The heavy iron-shod knives bit deep into the wood, splintering the shield instantly and driving Toby back onto his knees.

"Toby!" Kaelen yelled, trying to turn his bow, but a second enemy skirmisher smashed a heavy shield into the archer's ribs, sending him sprawling into the dirt.

"Stay down, dead weight!" the scar-faced attacker sneered. He kicked Toby squarely in the chest.

Toby gasped as the air exploded from his lungs, his thin body tumbling backward across the sharp stone flags. He tried to scramble for his fallen shortsword, but a second flanker stomped hard on his left wrist.

A sickening crack echoed through the noise of the battle.

"AGHH!" Toby screamed, his face contorting in agony as his wrist buckled at an unnatural angle.

"Yield, little scholar!" the third attacker laughed, raising a heavy steel boot to drive it down into Toby's exposed face. "You don't belong in this guild!"

From across the courtyard, Ethan heard the scream.

He turned his helmeted head.

Through the flash of magical spells and the dust of collapsing masonry, Ethan saw Toby pinned to the ground, his face pale with pain, his wrist broken, and three men standing over him with drawn weapons.

Something inside the core of the silver armor snapped.

It wasn't a tactical calculation. It wasn't a choice made by Ethan Cross, the college student from Earth.

It was the ancient, terrifying pride of the Celestari Vanguard—a force that had waged wars across star systems, rising up from the deepest depths of the suit's power core like a sleeping leviathan waking to blood.

The vast subterranean chamber did not drop.

It vanished.

It was as if the very concept of thermal energy, of air, of light, was instantly swallowed by an absolute, crushing void.

The chaos of the battle froze instantly. Spells that were mid-flight—bursts of fire, arcs of lightning—simply dissolved into harmless grey ash, crushed out of existence by a sudden, terrifying pressure that slammed down onto every single living person in the sector.

In the stands of the Grand Arena hundreds of feet above, ten thousand spectators suddenly stopped cheering. People gasped, clutching their chests as a suffocating, instinctual dread washed over the entire colosseum. High on the balcony, Magnus Hale stood up so fast his chair clattered to the floor. Selene Vael's face went dead white, her hands flying to her throat as her eyes stared down at the entrance of the subterranean corridors.

"What... what is that?" Prince Cassian stammered from three sectors away, dropping his greatsword as his knees buckled under a sudden, overwhelming weight.

Down in the subterranean courtyard, the enemy flankers standing over Toby froze.

They couldn't move their legs. They couldn't lift their weapons. Their lungs locked up entirely, unable to draw in air as a terrifying, pitch-black aura began to leak from the seams of Ethan's silver armor.

It wasn't human magic. It was a killing intent so vast, so ancient, and so utterly ruthless that it felt like standing in the cold vacuum of deep space.

Krindrus was no longer grumbling. He was roaring within Ethan's soul.

"THEY DARE?"

The voice resonated not just in Ethan's mind, but echoed directly through the ambient air, a metallic, multi-layered growl that vibrated through the stone floor and rattled the teeth of every person present.

"INFERIOR BIOLOGICAL TRASH... TOUCHING OUR PROTECTORATE?"

Ethan didn't walk.

He didn't run.

He simply was there.

In a fraction of a millisecond, a sonic boom detonated in the center of the courtyard as Ethan bridged thirty feet of distance in a single step. The stone flags beneath his original position shattered into fine powder from the sheer kinetic launch.

The scar-faced attacker who had broken Toby's wrist barely had time to dilate his pupils before Ethan's silver gauntlet closed around his throat.

Ethan lifted the grown, two-hundred-pound man into the air with one hand, his grip effortless, absolute.

"E-Ethan..." Toby choked out from the dirt, his tear-filled eyes wide with horror as he felt the sheer, terrifying wave of power radiating from his companion.

Ethan didn't answer. His visor flared—not with blue or white light, but with a horrifying, crimson-celestial glare that burned through the eye-slits.

CRACK.

Ethan didn't kill the man. He fulfilled the mandate of his inner warlord with absolute, terrifying precision. With a flick of his wrist, he shattered the scar-faced attacker's right arm at the elbow, bending the joint entirely backward. The man's scream was cut short as Ethan slammed him violently into the stone floor, the impact crushing three of his ribs and fracturing his collarbone in a single, fluid motion.

The second flanker, terrified beyond human comprehension, tried to scramble backward on his hands and knees, sobbing violently. "I surrender! I yield! I YIEL—"

Ethan's boot came down.

SNAP.

He crushed the man's kneecap into splinters, then reached down, grabbed his remaining leg, and dislocated the hip with a casual, sickening twist. The flanker collapsed into the dust, writhing in silent, shock-induced agony, his limb disfigured beyond recognition.

The third attacker dropped his weapons, clutching his head and weeping as he curled into a tight ball on the ground. Ethan stepped over him, caught him by the back of his steel breastplate, and tore the heavy metal armor off his torso like wet paper. Before the man could even scream, Ethan delivered three lightning-fast, calculated open-palm strikes to his shoulders and elbows.

CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.

Both arms were completely dislocated and fractured, hanging like limp rags at his sides as he slumped into the dirt, completely immobilized, completely broken, yet meticulously kept alive.

The remaining dozen attackers from Team Alpha and Team Delta dropped their weapons. They weren't fighting anymore. They were clawing at the stone walls, desperate to escape the nightmare trapped in the chamber with them.

Ethan turned his head slowly. The crimson glare from his visor swept across the remaining enemies.

He took one step forward.

"PLEASE! NO!" one of Delta's squad leaders shrieked, throwing his hands over his face. "DON'T! WE YIELD! WE ALL YIELD!"

Ethan didn't stop. He moved through the courtyard like a god of destruction walking among insects. He didn't draw a sword. He didn't cast a spell. He simply used raw, unyielding physical dominance, snapping forearms, crushing shoulders, and dislocating joints with terrifying, effortless efficiency.

Every strike was calculated to maim and disable, rendering them completely incapable of ever raising a weapon again without high-tier holy magic—yet leaving every single one of them breathing.

In less than forty seconds, fourteen elite combatants lay scattered across the ruined courtyard floor—disfigured, broken, screaming, or unconscious, bathed in their own blood and shattered armor.

Ethan stood in the center of the carnage. The dark, suffocating killing intent slowly began to coil back into his armor, the crimson glow behind his visor dimming back to a calm, icy silver.

The silence that followed was absolute.

The surviving members of Team Gamma—Bram, Kaelen, and the mages—were pressed against the far wall, staring at Ethan with wide, bloodshot eyes, trembling so violently they could barely hold their weapons. They weren't looking at a teammate. They were looking at a monster.

Ethan slowly turned toward Toby.

Part VI: The AftermathThe dark aura vanished entirely, leaving only the cool, damp chill of the subterranean ruins.

Ethan knelt down beside Toby. His massive silver gauntlet, which had just shattered bones like dry twigs, gently reached out and picked up Toby's uninjured shoulder, pulling him into a sitting position against a fallen pillar.

"Can you stand?" Ethan asked softly. His voice had returned to its normal, smooth, human tone—the terrifying, multi-layered growl of Krindrus completely suppressed once more.

Toby was shaking, tears streaking through the dirt on his pale face as he clutched his disfigured wrist. "I... I think so," he whispered, looking up at the silver visor. He wasn't afraid of Ethan—not truly—but his heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Sir Ethan... you... you saved me."

"I told you I'd keep you alive," Ethan said quietly.

A loud, frantic blast of brass horns echoed from the upper tunnels.

The heavy iron doors of the sector burst open, and a swarm of over fifty Guild instructors, fully armed guards, and high-tier medical healers flooded into the courtyard. Leading them was Lady Seraphine herself, her crimson cape billowing, her sword drawn and wrapped in a dense, defensive aura.

Behind her came the two King-Class mages, Magnus and Selene, their faces grim as they took in the absolute devastation of the chamber.

"STAND DOWN!" Seraphine commanded, her voice ringing out like a iron bell, though her eyes widened in shock as she took in the fourteen broken, disfigured combatants groaning in the dirt.

Ethan didn't raise his hands. He simply stood up beside Toby, keeping himself between the boy and the incoming Guild forces.

"The engagement is over," Ethan stated calmly, his voice echoing off the damp stone. "They are all alive. Call your medics."

Selene Vael stepped past Seraphine, her violet eyes scanning the dislocated limbs and shattered armor scattered across the floor, then looking at Ethan's spotless silver plate. Not a drop of blood had adhered to his metal.

"Medical team! NOW!" Selene ordered, her voice dropping all its previous casual tone. "Get stretchers for Delta and Alpha! Primary healers on the boy!"

Four healers in emerald-glowing robes rushed past the broken bodies of the attackers, converging on Toby. They immediately surrounded him, their hands glowing with high-tier holy magic as they knelt beside his broken wrist.

"Hold still, kid," the lead healer said gently, applying a warm, green matrix over Toby's arm. "This is going to itch."

As the emerald light washed over Toby's body, the sharp pain in his wrist began to dull. The dislocated bones clicked back into alignment beneath his skin with a soft, soothing warmth, the fractured bone knitting back together in seconds. The bruises on his chest and face faded, leaving only clean, unblemished skin behind.

Toby let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, testing his wrist as he flexed his fingers. "It's... it's fixed. Thank you."

"You're fine," the healer said, wiping sweat from her brow as she looked up at Ethan with lingering apprehension. "He's completely stabilized. But he needs rest."

Around them, the courtyard was a scene of utter chaos. Over a dozen stretchers were being brought in to carry away the broken remnants of Team Alpha and Delta's strike force. The medical staff were working furiously, casting high-level pain-numbing spells just to move the disfigured warriors without causing them to pass out from shock.

Lady Seraphine walked slowly toward Ethan, her hand still resting on the pommel of her sheath. She looked at the ruined floor, at the shattered pillars, and then up into Ethan's unreadable silver visor.

"The evaluation..." Seraphine began, her voice tight, controlled, yet laced with a deep, dangerous caution. "...is suspended. All remaining teams are to return to the surface immediately."

Ethan offered a small, polite nod.

"Understood."

He turned to Toby, offering a hand to help the boy up. Toby took it, leaning slightly on Ethan as they began the long walk back up the dark stone corridor toward the surface world.

Above them, deep within the Grand Arena, the spectators remained frozen in their seats. The projection screens flickered, showing the empty, blood-stained subterranean courtyard.

The trial was halted. The final results were locked in limbo. And high on the central balcony, King Aldric and the High Council watched in absolute silence as the silver knight walked out of the dark.
