Adrian's eyes wandered across Victor's office while he waited. The room was surprisingly ordinary for someone who seemed to know everything. Files were stacked neatly across the desk, alongside maps, reports, and folders marked with security classifications he didn't understand. As he absentmindedly reached for one of the documents, something partially hidden beneath the pile caught his attention. It was an old photograph, its edges worn and slightly faded with age. Curiosity got the better of him. He carefully pulled it free and studied the image. Four people stared back at him from another time. His breath caught instantly. There, standing in the center with an awkward teenage grin, was Alex—the person he used to be before his life became a maze of secrets and lies. Beside him stood his mother, smiling warmly with a hand resting on his shoulder. Rose appeared younger too, her face brighter and free from the burden she carried now. But it was the fourth figure that drew Adrian's attention. The man's face had been violently scratched out, the damage so severe that parts of the photograph were torn. Someone had wanted that person erased. Adrian frowned, running his thumb over the rough marks. Who was he, and why had Victor hidden this photograph among his most private files? The longer he stared at it, the more he felt that the answer was connected to everything that was happening around him.

Metal screamed as it tore from its hinges and crashed across the room. Adrian instinctively threw his arms over his face as dust and debris filled the air. The force of the impact knocked furniture across the floor, and for several seconds, visibility disappeared entirely.
Then the dust began to settle.
A silhouette stood in the ruined doorway.
Tall.
Motionless.
Watching.
Victor raised his pistol immediately.
"Get behind me."
Adrian barely heard him.
His eyes were locked on the figure standing in the opening.
Subject Zero.
The man who had torn through an entire facility by himself.
The man Victor feared.
The man who knew his name.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Subject Zero's silver eyes settled on Adrian.
A smile appeared on his face.
Not the smile of someone meeting an enemy.
The smile of someone finally finding something that belonged to him.
"So you're Alex."
His voice was calm.
Almost disappointed.
Adrian felt a chill crawl down his spine.
"You don't look special."
Victor fired.
The gunshot echoed through the room.
Subject Zero moved.
The bullet struck the wall behind him.
Before anyone could react, he crossed the room.
The movement was impossible.
One moment he stood at the doorway.
The next he was directly in front of Victor.
A loud crack filled the room as Victor was thrown backward and slammed into a steel cabinet.
Rose gasped.
Adrian froze.
Subject Zero turned back toward him.
For the first time, Adrian saw something dangerous behind the man's eyes.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Curiosity.
As though Adrian were some unfinished puzzle.
Then alarms sounded again.
The distraction lasted only a second.
It was enough.
Rose grabbed Adrian's arm.
"Move!"
The spell broke instantly.
Victor recovered just long enough to fire several more shots while Rose dragged Adrian through a side exit hidden behind the room's rear wall.
The door sealed behind them.
Subject Zero's laughter echoed from the other side.
"Run."
The single word followed them through the corridor.
And somehow that was more terrifying than if he had threatened them.
---
The facility had descended into chaos.
Red emergency lights flashed overhead while security personnel rushed through intersecting hallways. Gunfire echoed from distant sections of the underground complex. Every few seconds another explosion rattled the walls.
Rose led the way.
Victor followed close behind.
Adrian struggled to keep pace.
"Where are we going?" he demanded.
"Out."
"That's the plan?"
Victor shot him an irritated look.
"It'll have to be."
The group descended several flights of emergency stairs before emerging into a maintenance tunnel Adrian had never seen before.
The tunnel stretched for nearly a hundred meters before ending at a massive reinforced gate.
Victor entered a security code.
The gate slowly opened.
Cool night air rushed inside.
For the first time in days, Adrian saw the outside world.
Beyond the hidden exit sat a black armored van.
Its engine was already running.
A man leaned casually against the driver's door.
He appeared to be in his late twenties, with dark hair, sharp features, and the relaxed confidence of someone who never panicked.
When he saw Victor emerge, he grinned.
"Took you long enough."
Victor ignored him.
"Luca. Drive."
Luca's smile vanished immediately.
"That bad?"
Victor opened the passenger door.
"Worse."
Everyone climbed inside.
Adrian quickly noticed they weren't alone.
A young woman with short blonde hair sat near one of the rear windows, loading ammunition into a rifle.
Beside her sat a broad-shouldered man with a shaved head and a scar running across his jaw.
The woman looked up first.
"That's him?"
Adrian frowned.
"The famous Alex," the scarred man said.
"Wonderful."
"I hate all of you already."
The woman laughed.
"I'm Anna."
The scarred man nodded.
"Hagelo."
Before Adrian could respond, Luca slammed the accelerator.
The van shot forward.
Behind them, the hidden facility erupted in another explosion.
Nobody spoke.
Then Anna glanced through the rear window.
"We've got company."
Adrian twisted around.
Two black SUVs had emerged from the darkness.
Their headlights cut through the night.
They were closing fast.
Victor cursed.
"Black Orchid."
The first shot shattered the rear windshield.
Glass exploded inside the vehicle.
Anna immediately grabbed her rifle.
"Now we're talking."
The van swerved violently as another bullet struck the side panel.
Luca laughed.
Most people would have sounded terrified.
Luca sounded excited.
"Everyone buckle up."
The chase intensified.
The SUVs accelerated.
Gunfire erupted continuously.
Anna leaned out of a side window and returned fire.
Several rounds struck the lead vehicle.
Hagelo joined her moments later, unleashing a barrage from an assault rifle.
The night exploded into chaos.
Bullets tore through the darkness.
Engines roared.
Tires screamed against the road.
Adrian found himself gripping the seat as Luca drove like a man possessed.
One of the pursuing vehicles moved alongside them.
A gunman emerged through its window.
Before he could fire, Hagelo's rifle barked.
The man disappeared instantly.
The SUV swerved off the road and rolled into a ditch.
"One down," Hagelo muttered.
The second vehicle remained.
Persistent.
Determined.
Dangerous.
Anna fired again.
This time the rounds struck the SUV's front tire.
The vehicle lost control.
Moments later it crashed through a roadside barrier and vanished into darkness.
Silence returned.
Only the sound of the van's engine remained.
For the first time since escaping the facility, everyone relaxed.
Slightly.
---
Several hours later, they stopped at an abandoned safehouse hidden deep within a forest.
The building was old but secure.
Victor immediately disappeared to coordinate with surviving members of his network.
Luca and the others began unloading equipment.
For the first time all night, Adrian found himself alone with Rose.
She sat quietly near a window, staring into the darkness.
The exhaustion on her face seemed years older than before.
Adrian approached her.
"We need to talk."
Rose sighed.
"I know."
He pulled a photograph from his pocket.
The one he had grabbed from Victor's office earlier.
The one showing his old life.
Rose's expression changed instantly.
"Where did you get that?"
"Answer the question."
Silence followed.
Then Rose looked away.
"I knew your mother."
Adrian's chest tightened.
Victor had hidden countless secrets.
But this one felt personal.
"How?"
Rose swallowed.
"Because we were friends."
The answer stunned him.
Not colleagues.
Not acquaintances.
Friends.
Rose stared at the photograph.
"Your mother was one of the best people I've ever known."
Adrian sat across from her.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she made me promise."
Rose's voice trembled.
"She knew Black Orchid would come for you eventually."
Adrian frowned.
"How?"
"Because she discovered what they had done."
The room suddenly felt colder.
Rose continued quietly.
"She found records about the experiments. About Subject Zero. About you."
Adrian's heart pounded.
"And then?"
"They killed her."
The words hit harder than any punch.
For several seconds Adrian couldn't breathe.
Couldn't think.
Rose lowered her gaze.
"I couldn't save her."
Neither of them noticed the shadow outside.
---
A pair of silver eyes watched the safehouse from the treeline.
Subject Zero stood motionless among the darkness.
Blood stained his clothing.
None of it belonged to him.
The journey from the facility had been longer than expected.
But not difficult.
He had followed them the entire way.
Patiently.
Quietly.
Waiting.
Now he stared through the safehouse window.
At Rose.
At Adrian.
At the secrets they were desperately trying to protect.
A faint smile touched his lips.
The game was finally becoming interesting.
Inside the safehouse, Adrian continued questioning Rose, unaware of the danger waiting beyond the walls.
Unaware that Subject Zero had already found them.
Again.
And this time, there would be nowhere left to run.
