Chapter 7 - The Rules of the Blackharth Mansion

Aria stood near the towering arched window, her gaze floating over the pristine, snow-covered estate stretching into the gray horizon. Behind her, she could still feel Desmond's unwavering, sharp gaze resting heavily upon her spine like a blade poised to strike.

He had not dismissed her, nor had he uttered another single word since asking his terrifying question. The suffocating stillness between them had quickly morphed into another calculated test of endurance, a mental battle between two unyielding forces.

Aria remained completely motionless, refusing to betray even the slightest hint of discomfort or anxiety under his intense scrutiny.

Finally, the sharp rustle of high-grade paper broke the spell as Desmond turned away from her and casually sat down at his polished blackwood desk. He opened a thick leather file, his dark eyebrows lowering slightly as he focused on the documents before him.

"You are free to leave," Desmond said, his voice carrying the exact same detached indifference as before. His voice revealed absolutely nothing of the chaotic thoughts or suspicions hidden behind his cold, impenetrable eyes.

Aria turned gracefully toward him, inclining her head ever so slightly in a gesture of refined courtesy that suited her highborn status. She met his brief, dismissive glance with a serene expression, ensuring that her posture remained unbothered by his sudden dismissal.

"Thank you, Desmond," Aria replied softly, her voice smooth and devoid of any lingering hesitation. She neither hurried her pace to escape his suffocating presence nor lingered foolishly to provoke him further.

With measured elegance, she crossed the study, her light footsteps sinking silently into the plush oriental carpet that covered the dark hardwood floor. Her hand reached outward, her long fingers hovering just inches away from the heavy brass handle of the grand ebony doors.

She fully intended to return to her son and leave the oppressive atmosphere of the office behind.

"Aria," Desmond called out unexpectedly, his voice cutting through the silent room before she could turn the handle.

Aria paused mid-motion, her hand dropping gracefully back to her side as she turned her head slightly to acknowledge him.

"Yes?" she asked, keeping her tone light and pleasantly neutral.

Desmond did not bother to lift his gaze from the financial reports in front of him, his fountain pen gliding smoothly across the crisp paper.

"There are strictly enforced rules in this house," he stated plainly, his tone carrying an underlying weight that demanded complete compliance.

Aria let out an imperceptible breath, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied his calm silhouette.

"I have certainly noticed," she responded smoothly, maintaining a composed exterior despite the sudden shift in his demeanor.

"The rules exist for a specific reason," Desmond continued, his tone remaining completely flat yet laced with an undeniable warning. "They preserve order, security, and absolute discretion within these walls."

Aria waited patiently in place, choosing not to interrupt him as he allowed another pause to fill the space between them. She knew that men of his caliber rarely offered warnings without a purpose behind them.

"The west wing is entirely forbidden to you," Desmond stated directly, his dark eyes finally rising to lock onto her face with terrifying intensity. "Under no circumstances are you to step foot near those halls or inquire about what lies beyond them."

Aria felt her fingers tighten ever so slightly against the fabric of her skirt, a brief flicker of memory surfacing within her mind. She instantly recalled the subtle, low-level energy distortion her system had detected near those exact unadorned doors just an hour prior.

The recollection of Nova's high-priority alerts and the strange, magnetic pull radiating from that specific corridor flashed through her consciousness.

Something ancient, dangerous, and deeply tied to the secrets of this world was hidden behind those locked doors.

"I was not aware that the area was off-limits," she replied evenly, meeting his piercing gaze without trembling. She kept her voice smooth and perfectly balanced, hiding her internal calculations behind a mask of polite indifference.

"You are fully aware now," Desmond retorted coldly, his sharp jawline tightening as he held her gaze for a second longer. Silence settled over the study once more, thick and warning, as the unspoken boundary was firmly established between them.

Desmond let out a low, subtle hum, his eyes dropping back down to the documents spread across his desk.

"I do not enjoy repeating myself, Aria," he added, his tone dangerously quiet as he delivered his final warning. "Ensure that you do not force me to remind you again."

"I will keep that in mind," Aria answered calmly, offering him a polite nod before grasping the cool brass handle of the door.

Only after she acknowledged his demand did Desmond return his complete focus to his work, dismissing her presence as though she had already ceased to exist. He didn't offer another glance, leaving her to process the subtle confrontation in complete solitude.

Aria pulled the heavy door open and stepped out into the hallway, allowing the click of the latch to signal her departure. The massive ebony doors swung closed behind her with a deep, resonant thud that echoed down the long, shadow-drenched corridor.

The elderly head butler was already waiting for her right outside the study, standing perfectly straight with his hands folded neatly behind his back.

The moment she emerged into the hallway, he inclined his head in a deep, respectful bow that was noticeably more genuine than his previous cold greetings.

"Madam," the butler addressed her smoothly, his aged face remaining calm despite the tense energy radiating from the office. "If you would allow me, I shall escort you back to the main living area."

"Thank you, Jeffrey," Aria accepted gracefully, stepping into line with him as they began walking side by side down the endless, marble-paved corridors.

Unlike their initial trip toward the study, the elderly man seemed far less rigid, his eyes observing her with a newly discovered level of interest. The silent, suffocating atmosphere that usually dominated the hallway felt slightly lighter in her immediate presence.

"Chairman Blackharth seldom invites anyone into the east study for private discussions," the butler remarked softly, breaking the quiet spell that hung over the corridor.

Aria glanced at the old man out of the corner of her eye, surprised by his sudden willingness to offer unsolicited information.

"Is that so?" she inquired mildly, encouraging him to continue without betraying too much eagerness.

"In fact," the butler continued, his voice dropping slightly as if sharing a closely guarded secret of the household. "You are the very first person to exit that room without raising your voice in anger or panic."

A subtle smile tugged at the corner of Aria's lips, her eyebrows lifting in mild amusement at the unexpected revelation.

"Was shouting a common occurrence during his private meetings?" she asked lightly.

The butler let out a faint, bitter chuckle, a fleeting expression of tired amusement crossing his weathered features before disappearing.

"Not from the Chairman himself, Madam," he clarified softly. "He never needs to raise his voice to command absolute obedience. The raised voices always came from his visitors right before they lost everything."

Aria understood his implicit meaning instantly, realizing the true nature of the psychological battles fought behind those heavy ebony doors.

High-ranking executives, political rivals, and arrogant relatives entered that room hoping to negotiate or exert pressure on the hidden billionaire. Almost every single one of them left entirely broken, defeated by Desmond's terrifying composure and ruthless intelligence.

The fact that she had walked out completely unscathed and calm was an anomaly that the staff could not ignore. As they descended the staircase toward the lower levels, dozens of maids, guards, and footmen stepped aside to clear her path.

Every single worker lowered their heads in respect, bowing low as she glided past them with effortless grace. However, the nature of their silence had undergone a subtle yet profound transformation over the last hour.

The oppressive, paralyzing fear that usually gripped the household had begun to soften, replaced by a wave of intense, suppressed curiosity. Whispers floated softly through the wide hallways, passing from servant to servant the moment her figure moved past their stations.

"Madam wasn't scolded by the Chairman at all," a young maid whispered frantically to her companion behind a towering marble pillar. "I fully expected her to be confined to her quarters after what happened in the kitchen this morning."

"Look at her face," another servant whispered back, her eyes wide with genuine shock as she observed Aria's elegant demeanor. "She came back completely unharmed and composed. She even looks... almost relaxed."

Aria maintained her forward gaze, pretending to be entirely deaf to the quiet murmurings echoing through the corridors. She knew that gossip in a massive household was an invisible and highly potent weapon.

Information traveled faster than light within wealthy estates, shifting perceptions long before formal announcements could ever be made. Allowing a controlled narrative of her composure to spread among the staff was an essential step toward securing her position.

Suddenly, Nova's mechanical voice chimed clearly within the private confines of her mind, accompanied by a soft glow across her field of vision.

[Observation.]

[Household Behavioral Shift Detected.]

[Forty-two percent of total mansion staff have altered their primary perception of Host from 'Unstable Liability' to 'Respected Authority.']

Aria kept her facial expression entirely composed, though an amused thought flickered through her mind.

So my personal reputation directly influences your complex system calculations as well? She mentally asked her AI companion.

[Unknown,] Nova replied promptly, the digital interface flickering slightly as it processed the incoming parameters.

[Data regarding social influence metrics is currently insufficient. Further monitoring is required to establish a direct correlation.]

Aria found the system's analytical confusion genuinely interesting as she continued down the hallway toward the sunlit sitting room.

It seemed that everything in this world was intricately connected through invisible, delicate threads of influence and emotion. Family dynamics, personal trust, and even the opinions of low-ranking servants influenced the mansion's overarching atmosphere.

If she wished to survive her final mission, she needed to master every single one of these subtle variables. When they reached the first floor, the elderly butler paused right before a pair of white doors that led into the family quarters.

He bowed deeply once more, sweeping his arm forward in a welcoming gesture. "The Young Master is waiting inside for you, Madam."

Aria offered the butler a warm word of thanks before quietly slipping into the luxurious room.

Azeri was sitting exactly where she had expected to find him, looking remarkably small within the massive expanse of the sitting room. He was curled neatly into a large leather armchair stationed right beside a roaring fireplace that filled the space with golden light.

An oversized leather-bound book rested on his small lap, but his eyes were fixed firmly on the doorway rather than the printed pages. The very second his eyes locked onto her face, the rigid tension in his small shoulders visibly melted away.

"You came back," the little boy whispered softly, his delicate voice carrying no intense excitement or dramatic emotion. Instead, it was filled with a sense of relief that spoke volumes about his past trauma.

Aria walked over to the fireplace with gentle, unhurried steps, kneeling beside his armchair so that she was at eye level with him. She reached out and brushed a stray lock of dark hair away from his forehead, her touch light and comforting.

"I told you I would return before you finished your breakfast, didn't I?" Aria said, her voice dropping into a soft, affectionate tone.

Azeri looked into her eyes for a long, silent moment, searching her face for any signs of deceit.

He slowly nodded his head.

"I believed you," he admitted softly, his tiny fingers loosening their tight grip on the plush crow in his lap.

Nova's familiar, digital chime resonated warmly inside her mind, displaying a notification that only she could see.

[Sub-Mission Updated.]

[Earn Azeri Blackharth's Trust.]

[Progress: Seven percent to twelve percent.].

[Host Emotional Synchronization: Stable.]

Aria felt a genuine, tender warmth spread through her chest as she looked at the brilliant child sitting before her.

Before she could offer him another word of encouragement, a deep, powerful roar of high-performance engines echoed from the front driveway outside.

The loud rumblings of multiple luxury vehicles shook the massive glass windows of the sitting room as a convoy rolled through the gates.

Moments later, the head maid hurried into the sitting room without her usual composure, her face unusually pale and her breathing shallow.

"Madam..." the maid stammered anxiously, bowing quickly as she delivered the sudden news. "The elders of the Blackharth family council have unexpectedly arrived at the main estate."

The comfortable warmth in the sitting room vanished in an instant, replaced by a sudden, icy chill that swept through the air.

Simultaneously, high on the mansion's restricted third floor, hidden deep behind the heavy, locked doors of the forbidden west wing, something ancient and mysterious answered the disruption. It released a single, silent pulse of energy that resonated through the foundations of the house.
