Nearly a week had passed since the wolf clan began their journey north.
The scenery gradually changed with each passing day.
The towering forests grew denser, the air became noticeably cooler, and the mountains that once stood as distant silhouettes now loomed over the horizon.
By midday, Adrian, who had been leading the way for most of the journey, finally came to a stop.
"We're here."
His quiet voice immediately caught everyone's attention.
The wolves halted one after another, their eyes shifting past Adrian.
Even Leo, who had spent the last hour absentmindedly kicking small stones along the trail, slowly raised his head.
The sight before him stole his words.
An enormous crater stretched as far as the eye could see.
It was less like a crater and more like a world hidden within another world.
Towering trees covered nearly every inch of its massive slopes, their roots clinging to the ancient earth as if centuries had passed since the land had first been torn apart.
At the very center rested a vast lake.
Its crystal-blue water reflected the afternoon sky like a giant mirror, so still that it almost looked unreal.
A gentle breeze swept across the surface, sending small ripples dancing toward the shore.
For several moments...
No one spoke.
Even the wolves, who had grown up hearing stories about this place, stood silently as they took in the breathtaking sight.
Leo finally let out a slow whistle.
"Now..."
He folded his arms.
"...that's a crater."
Adrian nodded.
"The villagers live near the eastern side."
He pointed toward a narrow path that descended into the forest-covered basin.
"It's a small settlement."
"A tribe of demi-humans."
"They've lived here for generations."
Leo looked at him.
"They don't mind strangers?"
Adrian shrugged.
"They usually avoid outsiders."
"But they're harmless."
"If anyone knows the history of this place..."
"They do."
Kieran silently gestured forward.
"Let's move."
The group slowly descended into the crater.
The deeper they traveled, the quieter the forest became.
The songs of birds gradually disappeared.
Even the insects seemed strangely absent.
Only the crunch of leaves beneath their feet echoed through the ancient woodland.
Before long...
Adrian suddenly stopped.
His brows slowly knitted together.
"...That's strange."
Leo looked up.
"What is?"
Adrian stared ahead.
"The village..."
"It should be here."
The group pushed through the final line of trees.
Then...
Everyone froze.
Silence.
Where a village should have stood...
There was nothing.
Collapsed wooden huts lay scattered across the clearing.
Charred support beams protruded from the earth like broken bones.
Pieces of shattered pottery and abandoned tools were half-buried beneath layers of dirt and fallen leaves.
Nature had already begun reclaiming the place.
Vines crawled over broken walls.
Grass grew through cracked foundations.
The entire settlement looked as though it had been abandoned long ago.
Adrian slowly stepped forward.
His eyes wandered across the empty clearing in disbelief.
"...No..."
He whispered.
"This isn't possible."
"The village was still here."
Leo looked around silently.
There were no bodies.
No signs of survivors.
Only an unsettling silence.
Something about the place felt...
Wrong.
His eyes drifted beyond the ruined village.
Toward the earth itself.
Then he noticed it.
A colossal groove carved across the landscape.
It began deep within the forest, tore through the ruined village, and continued all the way toward the distant lake.
The mark was impossibly wide.
Ancient.
Its edges had long since been softened by time, yet the earth still bore the scars of whatever had carved it.
Leo slowly walked closer.
His eyes traced the enormous path stretching into the distance.
"...What..."
He muttered under his breath.
"...could leave behind a mark like this?"
The ruined village remained silent.
Not a single voice answered their calls.
No smoke rose from the collapsed homes.
No footprints marked the damp earth.
Nothing.
For the next several hours, the wolf clan spread throughout the abandoned settlement.
Some searched the broken huts one by one.
Others followed the tree line, looking for any sign that the villagers had escaped into the forest.
A few climbed the surrounding cliffs, hoping to spot a trail from above.
But every search ended the same way.
Empty.
Leo stepped out of another crumbling hut, brushing the dust from his sleeves.
"Nothing."
Sasha emerged from a nearby building carrying a cracked wooden bowl.
She tossed it back onto the ground with a sigh.
"Same here."
"The place has been abandoned for a while."
Adrian slowly walked through what appeared to have once been the center of the village.
His eyes wandered across the ruins.
"...It wasn't like this."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I've been here before."
"There were children..."
He looked around as though expecting someone to answer.
"Elders."
"Families."
"They were all here."
Leo watched him quietly.
For the first time since meeting Adrian, he could see genuine disbelief on the man's face.
Whoever had lived here...
Had vanished without a trace.
The sun slowly climbed higher into the sky.
Hours passed.
One search party returned after another.
Each shook their head.
Nothing.
No bodies.
No survivors.
No clues.
The silence hanging over the village became heavier with every passing hour.
Kieran stood near the edge of the settlement, his eyes sweeping across the surrounding forest.
"This doesn't make sense."
"They couldn't have simply disappeared."
Before anyone could reply—
"Chief!"
A shout echoed through the forest.
Every head turned.
One of the wolf scouts came sprinting toward them, breathing heavily.
"I found something!"
Without wasting another second, Kieran stepped forward.
"What is it?"
The scout pointed toward the far side of the crater.
"Follow me."
The entire group quickly moved after him.
The forest gradually grew denser, forcing them to push aside thick branches and tangled vines as they followed the narrow trail.
The sound reached them first.
A steady roar.
Like distant thunder.
With every step, it grew louder.
Eventually, the trees opened into another clearing.
Everyone stopped.
Before them stood a waterfall cascading from the cliffs above.
The river crashed against the rocks before disappearing into an enormous opening in the earth.
It wasn't merely a crack.
It was a massive circular chasm.
The water plunged straight into the darkness below, vanishing into its depths.
Mist rose continuously from within, carrying a cool breeze that washed over everyone standing at the edge.
Leo slowly approached the rim.
He carefully looked down.
Far below...
The falling river emptied into a vast underground pond.
Even from this height, he could see the water shimmering faintly in the darkness.
Surrounding the pond were towering stone walls.
And carved into those walls...
Several enormous cave entrances stretched into the unknown.
Leo narrowed his eyes.
"...Well."
A grin slowly appeared on his face.
"I don't think the answer is up here anymore."
His gaze remained fixed on the endless darkness below.
"I think..."
"...it's waiting for us down there."
The group stood silently at the edge of the massive chasm.
A cold mist rose continuously from below, carried upward by the deafening roar of the waterfall. The cool air clung to their skin as they stared into the seemingly bottomless abyss beneath them.
For several moments...
No one spoke.
Leo's eyes wandered across the rocky ground surrounding the edge of the sinkhole.
Then—
He stopped.
His brows slowly knitted together.
"...Again."
Kieran glanced toward him.
"What is it?"
Leo didn't answer.
Instead, he walked a few steps away from the others and crouched near the ground.
"There..."
Everyone followed his gaze.
Cutting across the stone was the same enormous trail they had seen passing through the abandoned village.
It wasn't a crack.
Nor had it been carved by tools.
The earth itself had been pressed downward into a long, winding path that curved naturally across the rock before disappearing over the edge of the chasm.
It looked as though something unimaginably massive had once moved through this very place.
Countless centuries had weathered the stone, softening its edges, yet the shape remained unmistakable.
Ancient.
Silent.
Waiting.
Leo slowly reached out and brushed his fingers across the worn surface.
His expression gradually stiffened.
The strange feeling returned.
That same uneasy sensation he'd experienced back in the village.
He couldn't explain it.
There was nothing alive here.
Nothing threatening.
Yet simply looking at the trail made every instinct in his body tell him the same thing.
Something about this place was wrong.
"...I don't like this."
He muttered quietly.
Kieran stepped beside him and studied the trail for a moment before looking toward the darkness below.
"It leads down there."
Leo followed his gaze.
"...Yeah."
"And I have a feeling..."
"...that's exactly where we're supposed to go."
Without another word, Kieran turned toward the wolves gathered behind them.
"Prepare the ropes."
Immediately, several warriors got to work.
Thick ropes were secured around the trunks of nearby trees, each knot pulled tight before being tested several times.
After a few minutes, one of the warriors nodded.
"Everything's ready."
Kieran gave a single nod.
"We're going down."
One by one, they climbed over the edge and began their descent.
Leo followed shortly after.
His hands tightened around the rough rope as he carefully lowered himself down the damp cliff face.
The farther they descended...
The louder the waterfall became.
Its endless roar echoed through the cavern, drowning out almost every other sound.
Mist drifted through the air, soaking their clothes as droplets of water splashed against the stone walls.
Leo glanced downward.
Far below, the river crashed into a vast underground pond, sending ripples racing across the dark water.
But that wasn't where they were heading.
To one side of the underground lake stretched a narrow rocky ledge.
Beyond it...
A massive cave entrance disappeared into darkness.
As they descended lower, Leo's eyes drifted upward toward the source of the waterfall.
Then...
He froze.
His grip on the rope tightened.
"...What..."
The whisper escaped his lips without him realizing it.
The others followed his gaze.
Towering over the underground lake stood an enormous stone statue.
It was so immense that it blended into the cavern itself.
At first glance, it looked like part of the mountain.
Then its shape became clear.
A colossal wolf.
It sat proudly atop the stone overlooking the entire cavern, its head raised high as though silently watching over everything below.
The waterfall crashed directly onto the top of its head.
The rushing water split around its face before streaming over its eyes like endless tears, finally plunging into the underground pond beneath it.
Centuries of flowing water had smoothed parts of the stone, yet the statue still radiated an overwhelming sense of majesty.
No one dared speak.
Even the wolves stared in silence.
Leo couldn't take his eyes off it.
The uneasy feeling that had followed him since discovering the ancient trail suddenly faded.
In its place...
A slow smile spread across his face.
Not his usual playful grin.
This one carried certainty.
He looked at the colossal statue for several more seconds before quietly speaking.
"...We came to the right place."
Above them, the waterfall continued its endless descent.
Below them, the ancient cave waited in absolute silence.
