[Third Person Pov]
It was the heart of winter, and snow fell in relentless curtains, blanketing the frozen world in a silent, suffocating shroud. The blizzard swallowed sound and sight alike, turning the landscape into a vast, white void.
Through the storm thundered a burning mount—its body forged from glossy black obsidian shot through with living veins of fire. Flames danced along its powerful limbs and flowing mane, casting a fierce, flickering glow that carved a path through the whiteout. With every thunderous gallop, its burning hooves struck the deep snow, melting it instantly into steaming puddles that hissed and evaporated beneath the falling flakes. Ghostly trails of vapor rose in its wake.
Astride the stallion sat a maiden, cloaked and hooded in heavy dark fabric now crusted with snow. She clung low against the horse's neck, her body trembling.
"It's going to be alright," she choked out weakly, her voice barely rising above the wind. Tears streaked down from beneath her hood, slipping from her chin only to evaporate in tiny bursts of steam the moment they touched the horse's burning mane. "We're nearly there… don't worry."
Where her hands gripped the stallion's neck, bloody handprints marked the obsidian hide—Golden smears that dried and blackened almost instantly from the intense heat. She was barely clinging to consciousness, her strength fading with every stride, yet she refused to let go.
Within the endless white shroud of the blizzard, the pair burned as a single defiant speck of light: obsidian, flame, and rider pressing onward through the storm.
It was not long before the familiar silhouette of Camp Half-Blood emerged through the swirling blizzard. The magical boundary shimmered faintly as the obsidian war horse crossed the property line, its flaming hooves leaving a trail of melted snow and rising steam behind it. The two observers stationed at the entrance startled visibly, their eyes widening in shock at the sight of the burning steed and its cloaked rider charging past them.
Winter had transformed the camp into a near-deserted wonderland. Snow blanketed every artistic building in thick, pristine layers, softening the usual vibrant chaos into a hushed, frozen stillness. The great peach tree at the center of the white stood solemnly, its branches heavy with snow and its fruit glazed in delicate frost, as if being preserved by nature.
The thunder of hooves and the unnatural glow cutting through the storm drew immediate attention. Those few demigods and campers who had stayed behind for the winter emerged from their cabins, faces etched with confusion and growing alarm as they hurried toward the commotion.
Hestia, goddess of the hearth, looked up from where she had been quietly tending the eternal flame. She rose to her feet in disbelief as the majestic war horse finally slowed to a powerful halt just a short distance away. Steam continued to billowed around its legs, melting the snow in a wide circle.
The maiden, still clinging weakly to the stallion's neck, tried to dismount. Her strength failed her completely. She collapsed sideways from the horse's back and landed hard on the snow-covered ground. The fresh powder did little to cushion the brutal impact, knocking what little breath she had left from her lungs.
"Artemis?!" Hestia exclaimed, her voice filled with shock as she finally recognized the maiden beneath the snow-dusted cloak.
Thalia burst out of Zeus's cabin, rushing forward, closely followed by Percy, who came sprinting from Poseidon's cabin. From their own unofficial quarters, Nico and Bianca emerged, joining the throng of Artemis's Hunters who raced over with urgent concern for their goddess.
"Lady Artemis! Are you alright?!" one of the Hunters cried.
"How could this have happened?!" another shouted, voice cracking with worry.
Artemis lay gasping in the snow, her body wracked with violent shudders as she choked on thick, unsavory blood and bitter tears. A deep gash across her side stained the snow beneath her in a spreading in a bloom, while vicious, brutal markings and burns marred her arms and shoulders, visible where her torn cloak had ripped open during the fall. Her usually radiant, immortal features were deathly pale, lips cracked and split open from how much she was chewing on them, her silver eyes dulled with agony and utter exhaustion. Every shallow breath seemed to cost her tremendous effort, yet she still fought to push herself up.
She reached out desperately, her blood-slick fingers grasping Hestia's hands with surprising strength as the goddess crouched down to help her. The crowd that had gathered drew in a collective, horrified gasp at the full sight of her injuries—the bloodied, shredded cloak clinging to her battered form, the deep lacerations still seeping ichor, the bruises blooming across her pale skin, and the raw, haunted look of a goddess who had barely escaped with her life.
"They took him…" Artemis gasped, her voice a broken rasp wet with blood. Tears flowed uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes, carving clean trails down her dirt- and blood-streaked cheeks. "Hestia… he gave himself up for me!"
Nearby, the obsidian stallion—Sebastian—began to thrash violently, kicking and bucking with agitated snorts and fiery neighs that sent sparks and small bursts of flame into the cold air.
"Sebastian! Calm down!" Thalia and Annabeth shouted together, trying to rein him in.
It took the combined efforts of Grover and Percy, using their unique satyr abilities to soothe the beast's raging emotions, before Sebastian finally began to settle, though his flames still flickered with restless intensity.
"Lucian…" Artemis coughed harshly, a fresh spray of blood flecking her lips as fresh hot tears streamed down her face. She clutched desperately at Hestia's dress with trembling, bloodstained hands, her knuckles white, her entire body shaking with grief and guilt. Her voice cracked into a desperate, anguished sob. "He came to warn me… I didn't listen… We were ambushed, and he… he…"
She closed her eyes tightly, fresh tears spilling as her face twisted in raw pain. "He didn't hesitate to give himself up to Kronos and his army… to ensure I made it out safely. That stubborn, idiot, fool… He sacrificed himself for me!"
"That just isn't possible," Nico growled, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. "Lucian wouldn't just surrender himself like that."
"Come on, Nico…" Bianca sighed softly, placing a comforting hand on her brother's shoulder. She looked just as tense and worried as the rest of them. "We know what Lucian is like. Who knows what he's thinking or what plan he has this time."
Artemis's words sent a ripple of commotion through the small open space, voices rising in disbelief and fear.
Chiron stepped forward with calm authority, his centaur form cutting through the growing chaos before it could spiral out of control. "Okay everyone, that's enough," he said firmly. "I know this revelation is deeply upsetting, but panicking will not help us—or Lucian. We must keep our heads."
Turning with measured grace, he issued clear orders. "Hunters, take your goddess back to her cabin and help her recover. Grover, I want you to bring ambrosia and nectar, and stay with them in case they need anything else."
The campers began to move, following Chiron's steady leadership. Percy took hold of Sebastian's reins, running a gentle, comforting hand along the horse's smooth, warm obsidian hide. "Just what the hell is happening?" he muttered, still visibly shaken and confused like so many others.
Annabeth remained outwardly composed, though those who knew her best could sense the storm beneath her calm facade. "What do you think is happening?" she said quietly. "Lucian is being Lucian… and doing something stupid again."
As the Hunters carefully carried Artemis toward her cabin, the rest of the group followed Chiron back toward the Big House. Along the snowy path, Percy leaned in toward Thalia and the others, lowering his voice to a whisper so they wouldn't be overheard.
"Is it just me, or did Artemis look really distraught about what happened to Lucian?"
Thalia elbowed him sharply, speaking through gritted teeth. "Of course she's distraught, you doofus. To her, Lucian basically just gave his life away for her. He could be dead for all she knows."
"I'm actually with Percy on this one," Bianca whispered, Nico nodding silently in agreement beside her. "I'm pretty good at reading people, and that reaction was…"
She let the words hang, the implication clear.
"Plus, isn't she supposed to hate men or something?" Nico added quietly. "That didn't seem like the reaction of someone who—"
Annabeth swiftly ended the conversation by draping an arm over Nico's shoulder and clamping a hand gently but firmly over his mouth. "Don't speak about it. Trust me. Let's drop this conversation right here," she warned, giving all of them a meaningful glance—lingering especially on Percy. "Right now, our priority is finding and rescuing Lucian, wherever he is."
The group continued through the snow in tense silence, the weight of the crisis settling heavily over Camp Half-Blood.
