Rovan's feet splashed through the dirty water.
The maintenance tunnel was narrow and dark. Old pipes covered both walls, while dim red lights kept flickering on the ceiling.
Beatrice leaned against his back, one hand gripping his shoulder.
Rovan glanced to the side. "Don't fall asleep."
"I'm not sleeping."
"You sound like you are dying."
Beatrice's face twitched. "Then move faster. I hope Master comes soon."
Behind them, the growls suddenly stopped.
Rovan slowed down. Then the heartbeat came again.
Thump.
The water under his feet rippled.
Thump.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Thump.
The infected behind them slowly turned their heads toward the deeper part of the tunnel.
Rovan looked back.
Several infected were crawling behind them. Some had broken legs. Some were missing arms.
One even had a metal pipe stuck through its chest.
But none of them cared. They all turned toward the same direction.
Rovan swallowed. "They stopped."
