Thunder-laden storm clouds spread from the distant horizon, their dense mass blocking out the radiant sunlight. Darkness engulfed the world, but it was not absolute, for massive bolts of lightning frequently flashed between the clouds. Each crackling thunderclap briefly illuminated the landscape, though this fleeting light brought no comfort—only heightened fear.
Such an unnatural phenomenon could only signify the arrival of a terrifying presence. However, most creatures beneath the shroud of storm clouds had no comprehension of this. All they knew was to huddle fearfully within their shelters, trembling as they prayed for the calamity to pass.
Those with faith turned to their gods in reverent devotion. Some knelt before divine statues, pleading for protection. Others, overcome by zeal, offered frantic confessions under the flashing lightning, convinced that the display was a manifestation of divine wrath.
Yet, contrary to their beliefs, this cataclysmic transformation had nothing to do with any god. Even deities, sensing the sudden shift in the heavens, trembled in confusion, unable to discern the source of the anomaly.
"What in the world is happening?"
In a distant divine realm, a god—whose form bore no resemblance to a human—quivered slightly. The god had been calmly attending to the prayers of its followers when the celestial change abruptly took place.
When the god realized that the phenomenon might endanger its worshippers, it immediately began probing for the cause.
CRACK!
A surge of divine power disrupted the probe, causing the god's sensory organs to rupture. Eyes burst, and mangled tissue fell from its divine body. Yet before the remains could hit the ground, divine power restored them in a reversal akin to time rewinding.
Despite the swift recovery, the god was stunned. It had never imagined that a simple investigation could result in such injury.
"What kind of entity is this? How powerful must it be to disrupt my senses like that? And why has it appeared here?"
Although the god's mind was filled with questions, fear prevented further probing. If the mere act of sensing had caused such harm, a direct confrontation could result in total annihilation.
Meanwhile, the source of the disturbance walked calmly through the storm-torn sky. The figure, an ancient being, carried a staff and revealed no aura of supernatural power. He appeared utterly unremarkable, though the fact that he strode upon air made his transcendence evident.
Lightning crackled and roared around him, serpentine bolts twisting through the sky. Some struck near his path, their deafening explosions akin to warnings. Yet the man remained unfazed, continuing forward as if in contemplation of the land below.
"Disperse," he murmured softly. His voice, almost a whisper, addressed the sky itself. "I don't care for such a world. I wish to see the earth bathed in sunlight."
Though the words seemed directed at no one, they carried a command that defied nature. In an instant, the storm clouds and the immense lightning ceased as if frozen by a forbidden spell. Everything—thunder, clouds, and bolts poised mid-descent—halted in place.
The next moment, the storm shattered. Clouds dissipated, lightning vanished, and brilliant sunlight once again bathed the land. The oppressive atmosphere lifted, leaving only peace in its wake.
"This... this is beauty," the being murmured, a faint smile gracing his lips. Below, creatures emerged cautiously from their dens, rejoicing at their narrow escape from disaster.
"Honored One, I am José, the Guardian of Kinones. May I be granted the privilege of knowing your name?"
A divine presence manifested in the clear sky. Countless translucent, glowing tendrils extended from above as a god of peculiar form appeared before the staff-wielding titan. The god's posture was one of extreme deference.
In the face of such overwhelming power, even gods instinctively knew how to submit. And though José longed to retreat into his divine realm, his role as a protector bound him to act. He had benefited from the prayers of his followers in peaceful times; now, in crisis, he was duty-bound to shield them, even at great personal risk.
"You're afraid," the titan observed calmly, seeing through the god with ease.
"Honored One, I..." Under the titan's piercing gaze, José trembled uncontrollably. Despite his immortal status, he felt as insignificant as an insect.
"I'm merely passing through. I have no intention of causing harm or destruction. You need not fear."
The titan's gentle tone surprised José. He had not expected such a powerful being to display kindness. Yet, even with these reassuring words, José's fear remained. His divine senses recognized the immense, world-shaking power standing before him.
"May I... may I ask what brings you here? Perhaps I could offer some assistance," José ventured cautiously.
The titan responded with serene patience, his ancient presence exuding an almost fatherly aura.
"I'm here to investigate," he explained. "Your world's structure is... distorted. I want to discover the source of this distortion."
The titan spoke openly, causing a shift in the laws of reality around him. The latent hostility of the world toward his presence waned, as if acknowledging his purpose. This response brought a deep, knowing smile to the titan's face. His suspicions had been correct: something was fundamentally wrong with this world.
"Distorted?" José echoed in bewilderment. For a being of such power to make such a claim, it could not be false. But how had José, a guardian deity, remained unaware of this?
"If your world were not warped, the land beneath you would be a thousand—no, ten thousand times greater than what you perceive. Yet here you are, confined to a fragment, believing it to be the whole."
Seeing José's confusion, the titan elaborated further. "You were meant for greater things. But because of this distortion, you remain stunted, unable to reach your full potential. If your world were whole, perhaps you would not feel fear standing before me now."
The titan sighed softly. "What a pity."
"Then... what should I do?" José asked, his tone a mixture of urgency and hope. He had been content with his existence until now, but the revelation of lost potential ignited a deep yearning for more.
"Wait," the titan answered simply. "I will find the root of your world's corruption. If all goes well, I will remove it, and you will regain what was meant to be yours."
As the titan turned to leave, a gateway of swirling space opened before him, revealing a view of a distant land. But before he could step through, a desperate plea rang out behind him:
"Great One! Please, allow me to follow you! I wish to trace the source of this corruption and help restore our world to its true state!"
