Anne Sutton nodded.
Vera Wells said, "That's incredible! Doesn't that make you Dr. Linden's daughter-in-law?"
Anne Sutton said, "Dr. Linden never considered Nathan Fawcett her son, so how could I be her daughter-in-law? Besides, Nathan has been gone for a long time."
Anne Sutton paused, then said melancholically, "Don't you think I'm strange? When he was still around, I thought he was a lot of trouble. But after he left, I often find myself thinking... if he were still here, would everything be different?"
Vera Wells sat beside her and looked at her. "What's past is past! Don't dwell on it. You should find someone and live a good life from now on. Don't keep sinking into the past. You have to look forward."
Anne Sutton looked at Vera Wells and nodded. "Mm."
She had been trying to look forward, too, but she just couldn't help it whenever she saw Charles Prescott.
The two of them chatted for a little while before Nathan Fawcett returned.
