Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Shadow Pack Arrives

The barricades groaned under the sudden, crushing weight of the onslaught. The first wave didn't just crawl out of the maintenance shafts; it erupted like a physical wall of dark, churning meat.

"Hold the line! Shoot them! Shoot them!" one of Woojin's perimeter captains screamed, his voice cracking as he discharged his shotgun into the darkness. The concussive blast lit up the vaulted ceiling for a fraction of a second, revealing the horrifying nature of the incoming threat.

These weren't the slow, predictable mutated rats or low-tier goblin scouts we had faced in the early days of the tutorial.

Emerging from the black fog were massive, predatory canines. Their fur was an unnatural, absolute midnight-black that seemed to actively swallow the dim light of the dying campfires. They stood nearly as tall as a grown man at the shoulder, their muscles rippling beneath thick, coarse hides that looked as dense as vulcanized rubber. Crimson, glowing irises burned in their sockets, and their jaws parted to reveal elongated, interlocking fangs dripping with a highly corrosive, acidic saliva that hissed as it splattered onto the concrete tracks.

Warning: C-Rank Monsters — 'Shadow Direwolves' have entered the field.]

"C-Rank?!" Yoon Sul cried out from behind me, his fingers flying across his glowing Gamer interface as he hurriedly cast a minor agility buff over my shoulders. "Hyung, the system prompt just confirmed it! These are C-Rank monsters! The average level of the players down here is barely Level 2! A single one of these things can tear through a frontline tank in three bites!"

"I told you, the system scales the difficulty to the sheer density of the crowd," I replied, my voice a calm, chilling contrast to the panicked screaming echoing around the metro station. My Dragon's Eyes traced the fast, aggressive mana flows pulsing within the lead wolf's chest. "When eighty-two stagnant souls refuse to move, the system doesn't send a warning. It sends an executioner."

A blood-curdling shiver rippled through the air as the lead Shadow Direwolf let out a long, resonant howl. The sound vibrated through the reinforced concrete walls, a psychological status-effect that instantly struck a wave of fear into the unhardened survivors.

"Awoooooo!"

[The enemy has utilized the active skill: 'Terror Howl'.]

[Your cognitive fortitude has completely nullified the psychological debuff.]

[Warning: Eighty-one nearby allies have been afflicted with the 'Fear' status effect. Their total attributes have been reduced by 15% for the next three minutes.]

Ah! My arms... I can't lift my pipe!" a civilian screamed nearby, his knees buckling as the invisible aura of the C-Rank beasts washed over the frontline.

The makeshift barricade of overturned train cars, which Woojin had proudly boasted was impenetrable, proved to be nothing more than a minor inconvenience to the shadow pack. The lead wolf flexed its massive hind legs, bounding off the rusted tracks and vaulting completely over the jagged scrap metal perimeter with terrifying, fluid agility. It crashed heavily onto a tattered canvas tent, instantly crushing the civilian inside beneath its massive paws before twisting its neck to snap another survivor clean in half.

Help me! Administrator Woojin, save us!" a bloodied guard yelled, desperately scrambling backward on his hands and knees as two more black wolves leaped over the barricades, their jaws snapping shut on his torso with a sickening crunch.

Woojin stood twenty yards back, surrounded by his inner circle of four heavily armed enforcers. The polished, benevolent mask he had worn so carefully was completely gone, shattered by the raw chaos of an A-Rank emergency event. His face was pale, his eyes wide as he realized his psychological virus, [Whisper of the Subconscious], was completely useless against non-human entities that possessed no higher cognitive reasoning to exploit. He couldn't whisper sweet lies into the ears of a C-Rank killing machine

Form a defensive ring around me!" Woojin ordered his men, his smooth voice replaced by a desperate, frantic bark. "Use the shotguns! Don't let them break the inner perimeter!"

He was completely exposed. The physically weakest of the Eight Evils was realizing the ultimate flaw of his build: when the human shields fail, a puppet master is just a fragile target waiting to be torn apart.

"Riyo, one's heading right for us!" Minsoo shouted, her twin daggers spinning in her palms as she dropped into a low, coiled stance.

"Riyo, one's heading right for us!" Minsoo shouted, her twin daggers spinning in her palms as she dropped into a low, coiled stance.

A massive Shadow Direwolf had detached itself from the slaughter at the main barricade, its crimson eyes locking onto our concrete alcove. It sniffed the air, detecting the faint, lingering scent of the high-calorie food supplies I had been selling earlier. With a deep, guttural growl that shook the loose gravel between the tracks, the black beast lunged forward, closing the distance in a single, explosive bound, its jaws wide open to crush my skull.

Stay back," I commanded calmly.

I didn't dodge. I didn't retreat. I simply adjusted my footing, drawing upon the deep reservoir of the three thousand system points I had just siphoned from the shelter's population. I opened the system shop interface in the corner of my vision with a casual flick of my mind.

[System Shop accessed.]

[Purchasing temporary passive attribute buff: 'Iron Body Alignment' — Cost: 500 System Points.]

[Purchasing temporary active skill upgrade: 'Heavy Blade Arts: Fracture' — Cost: 800 System Points.]

[Transaction complete. Your current strength and blade density have been temporarily increased by two tiers

A surging, white-hot torrent of pure system mana flooded my veins, expanding my muscles and anchoring my center of gravity into the solid concrete floor. The D-Rank Reinforced Steel Infantry Blade in my right hand began to vibrate violently, emitting a low, hum that actively dispelled the purple fog creeping around my ankles.

The wolf closed the final five feet, its acidic drool flying through the air.

"Fracture," I muttered.

I swung the blade upward in a blinding, brutal arc. The reinforced steel tore through the air with a concussive boom, colliding directly with the wolf's descending jaw. The temporary tier-upgrade turned my simple blade into an unyielding anvil; upon impact, the C-Rank monster's lower jaw didn't just split—it completely shattered into fragments of bone and dark, corrupted blood.

"G-Garahh!" the wolf whimpered, its momentum completely halted in mid-air as it crashed heavily onto the concrete floor, thrashing in agonizing pain.

Before it could recover its footing, I stepped into its guard, bringing the heavy steel blade down in a clean, vertical executioner's strike directly through the center of its skull.

[You have slain a C-Rank monster: 'Shadow Direwolf'.]

[You have received 300 experience points.]

[You have received 150 System Points.]

The black beast convulsed once and went completely still, its physical form beginning to dissolve into a thick, dark mist that was slowly siphoned toward my interface.

Minsoo let out a low breath, her eyes wide as she looked from the dead wolf back to me. "A C-Rank beast... dead in two strikes? Riyo, your damage output shouldn't be possible at this stage of the tutorial."

"It's possible when you let your enemies pay for your upgrades," I said, a cold, predatory smirk spreading across my face as I wiped the dark blood from my blade. I glanced over the battlefield, where Woojin's guards were being systematically slaughtered by the remaining thirteen wolves, the screams of the dying echoing through the ruined metro station. "The first wave has only just begun. Let's go harvest some more points."
