It was still exceptionally early in the morning, and finding any reliable transportation at this time of day was usually highly inconvenient and difficult.
Up front, the driver occasionally glanced up at the rear-view mirror, secretly and greedily observing the young, solitary girl sitting behind him. She was, without a doubt, exceptionally beautiful, the kind of rare cold beauty that immediately caught attention. As he kept looking at her, a dark and greedy thought suddenly surfaced in his twisted mind.
If he could somehow kidnap and sell a girl with stunning looks like hers to the right buyers, he would not have to worry about earning money for several months. The massive amount of cash he could make from such a deal would be more than enough to instantly solve all of his current financial problems and debts.
However, before he could continue entertaining that dangerous, illegal thought any further, the sharp, sudden sound of a ringing phone echoed loudly inside the quiet vehicle.
The phone belonged to Qiao Meixia.
The driver watched closely through the mirror as she casually pulled out her device and answered the incoming call.
"Yes..." Qiao Meixia answered the call with a calm and even tone.
"Meimei... Why on earth did you ask that man to take me home yesterday?!" Yang Mingxia's voice boomed from the other end of the line, complaining immediately without even a proper greeting.
"What? Did he do something to you?" Qiao Meixia asked, her facial expression remaining entirely unchanged and relaxed.
"No..." Yang Mingxia answered, her voice suddenly dropping into a much lower, incredibly flustered tone.
"Then what exactly is the problem?" Qiao Meixia asked, genuinely confused by her friend's erratic behaviour.
She truly could not understand why Yang Mingxia always seemed to have such a bizarrely intense, exaggerated reaction whenever Yin Zemin was involved.
"Meimei... You are an absolute idiot!" Yang Mingxia suddenly shouted out of frustration, before abruptly slamming the phone down and ending the call.
The line disconnected immediately afterwards, leaving behind a dull dial tone.
Qiao Meixia lowered the phone from her ear and stared blankly at the dark screen for a few silent seconds, still feeling completely mystified by the interaction. She genuinely could not comprehend why Yang Mingxia was so angry with her.
However, since Yang Mingxia clearly did not want to explain her feelings logically, Qiao Meixia decided it was not worth wasting her energy and chose not to think about it any further.
After quietly putting away her phone, she turned her attention back to the window, watching the scenery slip by. A few moments later, her sharp instincts kicked in as she noticed that the surrounding environment was becoming increasingly remote and unfamiliar.
The bustling city buildings and familiar storefronts had completely disappeared from the roadside.
In their place, there were now only dense clusters of trees, empty plots of abandoned land, and long, eerie stretches of a completely quiet, deserted road.
Qiao Meixia's eyes narrowed slightly, her senses instantly on high alert. Without drawing any unnecessary attention to herself or alerting the driver, she calmly unlocked her phone and opened one of her private tracking applications.
Within seconds, the advanced application loaded, displaying her precise current GPS location and their active route information. As her eyes scanned the glowing screen, confirming her suspicions, her gaze gradually turned freezing cold.
"Hey, where exactly are you planning to take me?" Qiao Meixia asked quietly, her sharp gaze locking onto the driver's face through the reflection in the rear-view mirror.
The driver was visibly startled when he heard her sudden, composed question. A blatant trace of nervousness flashed across his features before he quickly forced his facial muscles to relax, trying desperately to remain calm.
"What are you talking about, Miss? Of course, I am taking you straight to your destination." The driver answered, offering a strained, incredibly tight smile.
