Fourth Arc (Thorns of The Black Throne) - 470. Power and Temptation I
In Rose's room.
The candles had burned low, leaving the shadows to stretch long and soft across the wooden floor. Pale moonlight filtered through the gauzy curtain, casting silver onto velvet cushions and half-drunk cups. The scent of chamomile and dried berries drifted faintly in the air, mingling with the faintest trace of perfume, rosewater, of course. Not overwhelming. Just enough to live in the room like a ghost.
Jane was asleep already, curled into the bed near the far wall, her breathing slow and steady, wrapped in a blanket too large for her. The fire was out, just glowing embers now, the crackle long gone. Silence reigned here. Heavy. Restful.
But Angel wasn't sleeping.
He sat at the low table in the corner, spine straight, legs crossed, the thin fabric of his black tunic falling in clean folds around him. His eyes were closed. Unmoving. Barely breathing.
That stillness wasn't sleep.
That was focus.
He had cast his gaze elsewhere, his true gaze. The Evil Eye. Again.
And right now, it was locked on Seraphine and Darius.
He watched the way Seraphine leaned on the window with hungry eyes. How Darius sat crumpled on the edge of the bed. Watched the silence between them, the kind of silence that wasn't peaceful or companionable, but resentful. Dead.
Then the table clicked.
Soft.
Not startled. Not sneaking.
Just quiet.
Angel didn't move.
He didn't need to.
He felt her presence before she even spoke. That faint shift in the air. That grounded, gentle rhythm of Rose's steps across the carpeted floor.
She held a cup in her hand. Thin porcelain.
Tea.
Not for herself.
She walked up to the table and lowered herself to sit beside him. Not opposite. Not across. Beside. Close enough their knees almost touched. Close enough that the warmth from the cup could pass through both of them.
She held it out to him. Wordlessly.
He opened his eyes.
Still sharp. Still watching. But a little softer now.
He took the tea.
She didn't ask what he saw.
Not at first.
He brought the cup to his lips and inhaled. The scent hit first. Lemongrass. Bit of mint. Some dried flower he couldn't name but smelled faintly like honey. He sipped. It was warm. Not scalding. Smooth. It grounded him.
He exhaled slowly and finally spoke.
"She wants to seduce me."
Rose's eyes flicked sideways. "Seraphine?"
Angel nodded once. Still looking at the tea.
"Not for affection. For control. She's calculating it. Thinking it through."
"I figured as much," Rose said calmly. "She kept looking at you like a merchant looking at an artifact she couldn't quite afford."
Angel's lip twitched. Just barely.
He sipped again.
"She thinks I'm the kind of man who can be swayed by power or temptation," he said quietly. "That she can use her position, her influence, maybe even her body to make me her puppet."
Rose leaned her head on her hand, watching him. "She's not the first to try."
"No," Angel said, "but she's better at hiding it."
She nodded thoughtfully. "And the king?"
"He doesn't like me."
"That obvious?"
Angel turned his head toward her, eyes unreadable. "It's not just dislike. It's insult. He felt challenged. Every noble that leaned my way, every glance that skipped over him, every moment the room forgot who built the walls they were standing in."
"And me?" Rose asked.
Angel looked at her for a moment.
Then said, "She sees you as a flaw."
Rose didn't react. Not in her face. But her fingers tapped the table once. Deliberate.
"She thinks my affection for you is proof I can be manipulated," Angel said. "That if a woman can sway my heart, another can sway my decisions."
Rose huffed softly. "So dramatic. They act like we write military policy in bed."
Angel smiled faintly at that. Not a full one. Just a curve.
"She doesn't understand," he said.
"She doesn't understand you," Rose corrected. Then added, "Or us."
He nodded again.
"She asked about you," he added. "Or thought about it. I saw it."
Rose raised an eyebrow. "And?"
"She thinks you're in my way."
"That's a dangerous assumption," Rose said quietly.
